On Thursday, Serena Williams and sister Venus will team up in the women's doubles competition. In the night session. On Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 14-time Grand Slam doubles champions meet Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova at 00:00 BST. It's not one to be missed.

Elsewhere, women's world number one Iga Swiatek opens play on Arthur Ashe tomorrow as she meets American Sloane Stephens, while men's third seed Carlos Alcaraz plays Federico Coria and Rafael Nadal takes on Fabio Fognini in the night session.

That really was quite incredible. To think we have watched Serena Williams play like that. I wouldn't have been surprised to see that performance last summer before the injury struck at Wimbledon perhaps.

I don't think any of us could have imagined we would have the privilege of seeing her play that sort of tennis ever again.

• Andy Murray reached the US Open third round for the first time since 2016 as he overcame a confident start by young American wildcard Emilio Nava;
• Joe Salisbury and American team-mate Rajeev Ram began the defence of their US Open men's doubles title with a straight-sets win;
• World number three Maria Sakkari was knocked out of the US Open in the second round by China's Wang Xiyu.
• Nick Kyrgios complained of fan smoking marijuana in his second-round win.

Here's a little more from Serena Williams:

"I am super competitive. Honestly I am looking at it as a bonus.

"I don't have anything to prove, I don't have anything to win and I have nothing to lose.

"I have had an 'X' on my back since 1999 and it I am just enjoying it and it has been a long time since I have done that."

On contesting doubles with with sister Venus tomorrow, she added:

"I am so excited for doubles. We have to play again and I am excited to play with Venus and get some more practice. I need some more matches."

Speaking on court after her victory, Serena Williams said:

"You know there's no rush here. I'm loving this crowd - it's really fantastic. There's still a little left in me. We'll see."

On beating the world number two, she added:

"Well, I'm a pretty good player. This is what I do best. I love a challenge and I love rising to the challenge. I have been practicing really well and I was thinking 'it just isn't me' [after recent losses]"

"I'm just Serena. After I lost the second set I thought I have to give my best effort because this could be it. I just did my best."

She's up against a six-time champion, with almost the entire arena cheering her every mistake.

It is not always pretty, but that was very brave from Serena.

Serena Williams raises two arms in the air as she comes out on top of another exquisite rally to clinch the game.

What a brilliant first set from Britain's Jack Draper, but a topsy-turvy final game to finish it off.

Stunning play culminating in an overhead smash from Felix Auger-Aliassime brings up two break points, but he can't convert the first. Nor the second, as Draper smashes an ace down the middle.

Another ace follows to hand Draper the advantage and set point, but a double-fault sees his chance go begging.

He saves another break point with a cracking forehand strike, and then converts set point at the second time of asking. He celebrates with a huge fist pump.

A Serena classic.

The American follows up the wide serve with a forehand out the other side for deuce.
