  1. Par for Clark againpublished at 15:24 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -3, Woodland E (8)

An eighth par in a row for Wyndham Clark who strokes in confidently for par from four feet at the eighth.

He's not pulling away but no-one is making any dents into his lead.

  2. Niemann on formpublished at 15:23 BST

    Niemann +4 (7)

So I said Collin Morikawa was on the best score so far today.

But scrolling down the leaderboard a bit further, I realise that was wrong.

Joaquin Niemann is on -4 after five birdies in his opening six holes.

If he hadn't received that two-shot penalty for chucking a club yesterday, he wouldn't have to be working quite so hard.

Bryson going for the missed cut calendar year grand slam!

    Iain, Kenilworth

What is going on with Bryson? He’s toying with another cut line. Six top 10s in the majors in the last two years (24,25) including a win and two second places but now at risk of three MCs in a row this year. Crazy!

  4. What's the cut line at the US Open?published at 15:19 BST

It's the top 60 and ties that will make the weekend so at the moment that would be about +2.

If you stick around with us, it will get nervy for a whole host of the world's best a little later.

  5. Major champions make movepublished at 15:16 BST

    Morikawa E (9), Schauffele -1 (7*)

A couple of notable Americans are making moves up the leaderboard after patchy opening days.

Back-to-back birdies for Xander Schauffele at his sixth and seventh holes have got him into the red. The two-time major champion is always good at the US Open.

Then there's Collin Morikawa who makes the turn at three under today, the best score on the course.

It puts him at level par for the tournament.

  6. JT on birdie trainpublished at 15:15 BST

    Thomas -2 (7*)

Justin Thomas is 'on a heater' as they say, with back-to-back birdies making it three in six holes as he marches onto two under and creeping up that leaderboard.

JT will be hoping for the wind to blow as there aren't too many players with a better range of shot shapes than the two-time US PGA Championship winner.

  7. Birdies birdies everywherepublished at 15:11 BST

    Rahm -2, Rose -1, Spieth +2 (5)

The par-five fifth is playing the easiest hole this week, so far.

And Justin Rose, Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth take advantage by picking up birdies.

Rose nudges in from a couple of feet after mis-reading a 25-footer for eagle. But that's two on the trot to get the Englishman into the red figures.

Rahm rolls in a five-footer to get back to where he started the day, while Spieth's 10-footer keeps him interested.

  8. Mouw making movespublished at 15:10 BST

    Mouw -3 (11)

Three birdies and no bogeys so far today for William Mouw, who finds himself tied for second place in the US Open on just his second appearance in the tournament.

The 25-year-old came through the same qualifying event as Max McGreevy in Canada - and also came through that eight-man play-off to grab one of three spots in the field.

Both of them are making the most of it so far.

  9. Clark misses latest birdie puttpublished at 15:08 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -3, Woodland E (7)

Another chance goes begging for Wyndham Clark at seven and this is unlucky as half his ball seems to disappear into the hole before clinging to the edge and staying up.

He could be five or six shots clear by now, but the good news for the rest of the field is he's yet to pull away.

Handy having a three-shot lead nonetheless.

More trouble for Gary Woodland - and it's another shot gone.

  10. Bob's bounceback birdiepublished at 15:07 BST

    MacIntyre E (6*)

What better way to atone for a bogey than getting that shot right back on the next hole. Solid drive, attacking second to 10 feet and the putt drained.

He needs to build on the momentum.

  11. Par for Fitzpublished at 15:04 BST

    Firtzpatrick -3, DeChambeau +4, Hovland +6 (7)

While Bryson DeChambeau is making birdies and bogeys (and doubles) Matt Fitzpatrick is parring his way around Shinnecock Hills today with seven in a row to start his second round.

    Matt Fitz-par-trick? Anyone?

  12. RaI makes progresspublished at 15:02 BST

    Rai +2 (8)

    Aaron RaiImage source, Getty Images

It's been a good round from Aaron Rai today after his tricky +4 on day one.

The US PGA champ is two under through eight and making his way up the leaderboard.

Makes you laugh Rahm blaming the wind for his shot not reaching the green. They're already getting help from the USGA putting 10 to 25 yards on the width of the fairways to help the poor souls and the greens being watered. Where has the test for these guys gone?

    Gordon, England

  15. Bogey for Bobpublished at 14:54 BST

    MacIntyre +1 (5*)

Another bogey for Bob Mac after another misjudged second shot, albeit coming out of the rough.

The wind isn't as strong as it was on Thursday but it's clearly playing a role.

Also tricky are the false fronts on 14 of the 18 greens. The Scot finishes just off the front on the 14th and takes three from 50 feet.

  16. Pars for Clark and DJpublished at 14:54 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -3, Woodland -1 (6)

"Wow," breathes Dustin Johnson as his putt comes up one revolution short of dropping into the cup.

That's about as expressive as we get from the languid American.

For a moment, Wyndham Clark's par putt looks like it's drifting away but it holds its line and falls in.

  17. Postpublished at 14:51 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -3, Woodland -1 (5)

An expressive Wyndham Clark holds his hands up as his chip out of the sand next to the sixth green goes a little long. He's still smiling though. Guess a three-shot lead keeps you relaxed.

Gary Woodland nudges it close from 33 feet to stop his run of consecutive bogeys.

DJ is the nearest to the pin. He can eye a 17-footer to get back to -4.

  18. Dressed to impresspublished at 14:47 BST

A split image of a black and white hooped shirt with black and white striped trousers

Because I'm childish, I've put together Gary Woodland's top half with Viktor Hovland's trousers.

Guaranteed to make your eyes go woozy.

And yes I know the clubs don't quite line up. I'm also trying to watch the golf...

  19. Rose birdie as Rahm toilspublished at 14:42 BST

    Rahm -1, Rose E, Spieth +3 (4)

I wonder if the slightly slower greens are catching out some of the players.

Jon Rahm flicks his wedge from short of the fourth on to the green and can only chuckle to himself as the ball pulls up six feet short. Another tester to keep his bogey-free streak going.

Here's Justin Rose to get back to level par... up the hill, straight. Nailed it.

Back to you Jon... lip out. First bogey. That will smart. Four shots from 118 yards.

  20. DeChambeau makes birdie, then bogeys nextpublished at 14:40 BST

    DeChambeau +4 (6)

Catching you up with the trials and tribulations of two-time champion Bryson DeChambeau who made back-to-back sixes earlier.

He stemmed the bleeding at the fifth with a birdie - almost an eagle - but has immediately gifted that shot back to Shinnecock.

Plenty of work to do over his remaining 12 holes to make the weekend.
