The goal-shooter missed with a tentative first shot but has found her rhythm since, scoring with her next three.

The scoreline has blown out in the first quarter to allow England's shooters to have a go at some of the longer range shots.

Dominant stuff from England and Sasha Glasgow adds one at the buzzer to make it a 19-goal lead.

The world number three side were expected to win well today but, as I've mentioned, the need to boost their point average means England will be going all out from beginning to end here.

Scotland's Tom Wright crashed out of the competition when failing to complete a lift in the clean and jerk.

He has been talking to TNT Sports: "I let it get to my head on the first attempt where I thought I stabilised and got the green signal but they overturned it.

"I should have stuck with it a bit more, have a bit more self belief which will come with time.

"I've been in the sport for under two years, I'm happy where I'm at and there's a lot more to do, definitely."

Uneeq Palavi is yet to miss for Tonga but they just can't get the ball to the goal-shooter anywhere near as often as they'd like.

England continue to stretch their lead and are showing no signs of letting up.

Suffocating defence from England is helping them stretch that lead ever further.

With six minutes left of the first quarter, the advantage is into double digits.

England have stretched the lead to five with some sharp shooting from Eleanor Cardwell and Sasha Glasgow.

Fast start from England and racking up a big score could be important.

A place in the semi-finals may come down to point average and a heavy defeat by Australia put a dent in the 2018 champions'.

This is only the second meeting between these two nations. England and Tonga Tala met for the first time at the World Cup in 2023 where the Roses comfortably beat The Tala 72-46.

Away they go and England very quickly take the lead through Eleanor Cardwell.

Head coach Anna Stembridge says that Uneeq Palavi is the Tonga player that England need to be wary of.

She tells TNT Sports that preventing the ball getting to her will be a key part of the plan.

Uneeq Palavi wasn't going to play for Tonga. Then her grandmother called.

Born in Australia to a Samoan mother and Tongan father, Palavi was coming through the Australian netball system when Tonga Netball approached her about representing the national team.

She ignored the calls.

She didn't feel ready for international netball.

But Tonga Netball wasn't prepared to give up. So they called her grandmother.

"The CEO of Tonga Netball does know my grandma," Palavi recalls. "Pretty much everyone in Tonga knows my grandma."

"I used to think she was the Queen of Tonga."

Her grandmother made sure the message got through.

"She cared enough to have called my grandma to get a hold of me and really slap me in the face and say, 'This is an opportunity, so take it.'"

Palavi listened.

She made her debut for Tonga at the 2019 Pacific Games and became part of one of the most remarkable stories in international netball.

For Palavi, representing Tonga became about more than netball.

"Playing with girls of your ethnicity, your culture, your country, that's above and beyond."

Since then, Tonga Tala have risen from international outsiders to one of the world's leading netball nations, winning gold, qualifying for their first Netball World Cup since 1999 and reaching the world's top 10.

Sometimes, all it takes is a phone call from grandma.

I'm not sure the Hydro will be quite as loud as it was for the Scotland game but it should still be a good atmosphere given the importance of this one for Anna Stembridge's side.

No team. No coach. No training facilities.

No problem.

When Salote Sisifa became CEO of Tonga Netball in 2014, she had a blank canvas. Some would call it an empty cupboard.

Twelve years and much upheaval later, the Pacific Islanders are ranked eighth in the world. For context, that's just behind Wales and ahead of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Tonga launched their first Commonwealth Games netball campaign on Saturday in Glasgow when they faced Australia, the world's preeminent team.

Their story is remarkable. It tells of how TV anchor Sisifa went from reading the news to making the news, changing her country's sporting future.

Right then, next up at the Hydro it's England's turn in the netball.

They take on Tonga and need to win to keep their hopes of making the semi-finals alive.

Victory here would set up a huge game against South Africa tomorrow evening with a place in the last four on the line.

England's Josh Hutton has limped out of the weightlifting men's 94kg competition.

In third place after the snatch, he was attempting 173kg in the clean and jerk but quickly put the bar down and hobbled off the stage.

He has had to withdraw and his medal hopes are over.

Scotland centre Hannah Leighton, speaking to TNT Sports: "A little bit gutted because we pushed them so close but so proud we pushed them that far.

"We were all absolutely going for it because we knew we were good enough to push them all the way.

"We went for everything, tried to challenge but couldn't quite get over the line.

"Today was a really good show of what we can do defensively and how clinical we can be in attack. So we have to take that into tomorrow against Uganda."
