Birdie, birdie, eagle.

Bob MacIntyre has finished his tournament in style to rise to 13 under and in a tie for ninth.

But the Scot will rue three consecutive bogies at the start of his back nine, which took him out of contention.

It's a similar story for England's Matt Wallace, who eagles the 18th to finish on the same score.

Rory McIlroy has a four iron out and zips his second just through the back of the 17th green. He should get up and down for a birdie four from there.

He takes his flatstick and the ball pops off the surface but trickles down to a foot or two before he knocks in his birdie putt for a share of the lead with Aaron Rai (who is in the clubhouse), JJ Spaun, who has just knocked in a birdie on the 15th and Manuel Elvira.

Manuel Elvira tugs his approach into the 14th and is unable to save his par after leaving himself a five footer with his second.

I thought play-off earlier on and I still think that's a possibility.

But someone's going to have to jump up there and make a move.

Rory McIlroy knocks his hat off as if to say 'how has that not dropped?'. It's another birdie putt albeit from 17 feet that has gone begging.

Matt Fitzpatrick finds the dance floor in two but misjudges his eagle putt, which has nowehere near as much break as he was anticipating.

Ryan Fox has the advantage of following the Englishman from a similar line but he over compensates. Both conclude their rounds with birdies, which is not quite enough for either. They sit in a tie for third.

Manuel Elvira has an eagle putt on the 12th but plays smart, rolling up close and tapping in for birdie to take the outright lead.

He has his sights firmly set on a first DP World Tour win here. What a story that would be.

Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott both had mid-range birdie chances on the 15th but neither can convert them.

The Northern Irishman's effort breaks from the right and trickles left as a young fan waves a sign at McIlroy asking if he'll give her one of his golf balls.

Matt Fitzpatrick cannot believe that has not dropped. His eagle putt on the 17th appeared to be tracking nicely towards the hole but it somehow stays right.

The Englishman and his playing partner Ryan Fox probably both need eagles on the 18th to have any chance here.

Aaron Rai's birdie effort rolls down the slope but it's a timid effort and falls well short.

The Englishman delicately putts for par and finishes at 15 under par with a round of 66 - including seven birdies.

He's the clubhouse leader, the co-leader - will it be enough?

Co-leader Aaron Rai has a 35-foot putt for birdie on the 18th.

He's holed these under pressure before - to win this event I think he'll need it, with others still with holes to play.

What a tasty response from Rory McIlroy. The six-time major winner zips into four feet on the par-three 14th.

And this time his short birdie putt disappears.

Adam Scott's ball is just outside Rory McIlroy's so he is up first and the Australian makes no mistake.

What did his playing partner take from that? Not too much. It's a chance spurned.

It does feel like there's always an extra gear available to Rory McIlroy that you can't say about so many of the other players.

It's just the quality of golfer that he is.

Viktor Hovland is at four under for the day with no blemishes to his card today but he now finds the water on the 18th.

His short approach shot skids when it hits the fringe and scurries down the banking into the drink.

It's like throwing darts for Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott as they attack the pin on the 13th.

Both drop into around five feet to present themselves with birdie opportunities.

Aaron Rai falls low with a 15-foot birdie putt - a big opportunity missed for the Englishman.

He goes to the 18th knowing that many in the chasing pack have got plenty of golf to play.

For a third day on the trot Manuel Elvira makes a birdie on the 10th and that means Aaron Rai has company at the top of the leaderboard.

I wonder if his brother Nacho, is out supporting him after signing for a one-over 73 earlier that leaves him at seven under overall?

Rory McIlroy's is playing off his tip toes, having to stand in the front greenside bunker with his ball a few inches above him on the grass verge.

It does not stop him from tickling a chip up towards the hole and then tapping in for a simply outrageous birdie, given where his drive ended up on the par-five.

Adam Scott also gets up and down from the sand for a four.
