Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton will start on pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix!

What a lap by the seven-time world champion. That's Hamilton's first pole since he was a Mercedes driver at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2023!

His former team-mate George Russell will start alongside him on the front row - the two drivers who need to win the race tomorrow to keep their title hopes alive.

  3. Antonelli goes P5published at 22:10 GMT

Kimi Antonelli doesn't need to be on pole on Sunday, and it looks like fifth will have to do for the champion in waiting.

Max Verstappen has locked up on his challenge for pole and has to settle for fourth on the grid.

    So that means...

  4. Hamilton beats Russell's timepublished at 22:09 GMT

But it doesn't last long, as the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton goes 0.009 seconds quicker than George Russell to snatch provisional pole away from the Mercedes man.

Charles Leclerc's latest lap can only put him third on the board.

If I were a betting man I would not know where to put my money and that is what is so exciting about this session.

I don't know where this will go and I can't wait to find out.

  6. Russell jumps onto polepublished at 22:07 GMT

George Russell pushed Charles Leclerc down into P2 and takes provisional pole!

  7. Postpublished at 22:07 GMT

And now Isack Hadjar is under investigation for crossing the line at the pit entry. It's not been the red Bull driver's day.

Right then. Who is your pick for pole? Is Charles Leclerc keeping hold it, or can someone else mount a challenge?

  8. Postpublished at 22:05 GMT

Isack Hadjar ran his Red Bull very wide at Turn 13 following a lock-up on his Q3 lap, so the Frenchman bailed his attempt and is without a time to his name.

  10. Verstappen beats Norris' timepublished at 22:03 GMT

The front row gets demoted to the second for Lando Norris, as Max Verstappen puts down a lap time of 1:16.692 to slip into P2 on these opening runs in Q3.

Verstappen had a decent final sector, and is 0.045 seconds off Charles Leclerc marker. But the Dutchman has that one-place grid penalty for his contact with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson yesterday.

  11. Norris on the front rowpublished at 22:01 GMT

Lando Norris puts his McLaren on the front row, but the world champion is is 0.177 seconds behind provisional polesitter Charles Leclerc.

  12. Leclerc goes quickestpublished at 22:00 GMT

Lewis Hamilton just makes a little mistake in the middle sector which stops him going quickest on his first push lap. The other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc gets round fine, and goes top of the timesheets with a 1:16.647.

George Russell's attempt is good enough for the second row in P3, while Kimi Antonelli can only manage fourth with his opening time.

  13. Postpublished at 21:57 GMT

So, who made it through to Q3? The big dogs are all there, minus one of the McLarens, and are joined by the two Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, plus the Alpine of Pierre Gasly.

Pole position is not everything, but everyone still wants it.

Track temperature is tumbling at an extraordinary rate. It is a real factor here and they will all have to adapt. It will change the way these cars behave.

  15. Go! Go! Go!published at 21:55 GMT

This might be a tough one to predict tonight. Pole position feels wide open at the moment.

    Here we go then.

    Q3 is green.

I’m no Ferrari fan but they could have been right in this title fight if they had just got the engine right this year. They just seem to fall short in quali and the races. Can they sort it for 2027?

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" says Haas driver Ollie Bearman when told he has failed to reach the top-10 shootout and will start P15.

That was odd session for McLaren. While world champion Lando Norris topped the times ahead of four-time title winner Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri has been left bewildered as to how he's ended up out of the pole fight in Mexico.

  18. 'A real shock'published at 21:51 GMT

    Marc Priestley
Former F1 mechanic on Radio 5 Live in Mexico City

Wow that is a real shock and Piastri will be bitterly disappointed when he has seen what his team-mate has done.

The track temperature has dropped dramatically. I think the McLaren is really susceptible to that and I suspect they lost their way in dialling into the conditions.

Piastri will find it very hard from down there running into turn one tomorrow.

  19. Out in Q2published at 21:50 GMT

    12. Franco Colapinto (Alpine)

    13. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)

    15. Oliver Bearman (Haas)

    16. Carlos Sainz (Williams)

  20. Piastri knocked outpublished at 21:48 GMT

Nico Hulkenberg can only go ninth on the board, which now becomes P10 with Pierre Gasly's better lap time.

Brit Oliver Bearman can save himself this weekend, but can McLaren's Oscar Piastri?

No! The Australian gets the boot in Q2 in P13. He tells his pit wall he doesn't know what happened.
