Well this weekend certainly blew away the cobwebs after a summer of unsociable hours, endless Shakira and hydration breaks.

The EFL is back, the Cup has given us a taste over the past three days and the real thing is just days away.

Plymouth have hit the ground running and look primed for a promotion push in League One while Exeter showed a lot of grit as they begin their quest to get back to the third tier following relegation and a summer of turmoil.

Plymouth goalscorer Bim Pepple said the packed house at Home Park showed the size of Argyle.

He told Sky Sports: "This club has big aspirations, it's a huge club, never a League One club - just look at this (crowd) for a Carabao Cup first-round match.

"We want to get back to where we belong, Championship minimum."

On having to wait until added time to win it: "We're delighted. It was tough, we knew it would be. We felt like we should have buried it sooner but we persevered and got over the line.

"We said when we saw this game we didn't beat them last year, we knew this was our time to beat them.

"We have momentum from the end of last season, now this, we are rolling, we are ready (for Stockport on Saturday)."

Truth be told Argyle should have scored one of those headers earlier in the game.

Plymouth matchwinner Alex Hartridge was in disbelief after his late goal to help see off former club Exeter City.

Asked how he was feeling, he told Sky Sports after a long pause with a broad grin: "Disbelief in terms of how that game ended.

"Lots of different emotions. Joy at the minute."

What drama. Home Park is still rocking as the home fans celebrate a famous win.

Alex Hartridge had had some tough abuse from the visiting fans in the first half, but he got his payback with that opening goal.

It was nothing more than Argyle deserved - they had the bulk of the chances, and had Will Evans had his shooting boots on, they would have been well out of sight before the late drama.

As always, they save the Home Park drama for the closing stages...

Two goals in two added minutes to settle the Devon derby against 10-man Exeter and tee up a tie with Premier League Coventry in round two.

The red card for Ethan Sutherland in the final minutes proved the tipping point and Alex Hartridge, who played 172 games for Exeter, nodded home a deep corner for his first Plymouth goal on his first Plymouth appearance, before Bim Pepple settled it with a goal which owed plenty to City's calamitous defending.

The Grecians were game for the vast majority of the game but it's the League One club who go through and City are left to focus on League Two.
