Aston Villa have yet to score or collect a point after two matches, having managed just 13 shots, 0.6 expected goals and 21 touches in the opposition box across their opening fixtures. That follows a summer in which players responsible for 51% of the club's Premier League minutes last season departed, including Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, who combined for 35 league goal involvements. Villa have also conceded five goals in their first two games, compared with just one at the same stage last season. Yet there is reason for optimism.
Unai Emery's side also made a sluggish start last season before recovering to win a European trophy and secure Champions League qualification.
