Argentina have become the first South American side to take the lead at this World Cup.

Messi is 39 next week, but wow he is up for it. He really wants this one. They kept him in cotton wool during the warm up games, but he is moving much more and doing much more than maybe we would have expected. He wants to leave the scene on a high.

  2. 'Not a lot between the teams'published at 02:57 BST

The difference in the teams has been Messi, there hasn't been a lot between them.

Neither side has had control of the game or made countless chances. Algeria will still feel the game is there for them.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 02:53 BST

    Argentina 1-0 Algeria

That's the break. Argentina lead through a goal from Lionel Messi. That came after both sides had what they thought was a goal ruled out for offside inside the opening 10 minutes.

A late opportunity for Liverpool and Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister but he nods over the bar.

The players look like the heat is affecting them now. I expected more energy from Algeria in the first half.

    Argentina 1-0 Algeria

This has been a decent spell for Algeria and Anis Hadj Moussa has a low strike, but a deflection wipes out any power in the effort. It doesn't drop kindly either for a team-mate and Emiliano Martinez can grab it gratefully.

After Lionel Messi caught Aissa Mandi with his studs on the calf of the Algeria defender...

Unbelievable that Messi didn't even receive a yellow for that challenge. Gets special treatment for sure.

    Jack, Melksham

Messi should have had a red card for that awful challenge, raking his studs onto calf, regardless that he is the best player ever. What example is that to kids watching?

    Paul, London

How is that not a red card for Messi?

Dan (Sat in Burton A&E, glad of something to watch)

    We wish you well, Dan.

The chances are starting to come at both ends and Thiago Almada can't keep the ball down for Argentina.

    Argentina 1-0 Algeria

A rare chance for Algeria and Fares Chaibi, who had a goal ruled out for offside earlier on, shoots from a tight angle, looking to squeeze the ball past Emiliano Martinez.

But the Aston Villa goalkeeper gets two hands up to the shot and parries it behind. From the corner, the ball is recycled back into the box and Chaibi heads wide.

I expected Algeria to put the pressure on Argentina a bit more, especially after the drinks break when I expected the manager to say ' let's try and get in their faces and win the ball back higher up'.

Just saw a stat saying Algeria had 46% of the ball. That just doesn’t seem right!

    Andy

Our stats have it at around 36% possession for Algeria at the time of writing, Andy.

Argentina are pushing for a second and it looks just a matter of time. A low ball is played into the box, but Lautaro Martinez can't convert.

The game has settled down a bit and neither team is really going in search of the ball or going to press. Algeria don't want to be drawn out and Argentina have never done that.

The atmosphere inside this stadium is electric.

Unlike other World Cup stadiums, this is completely open air with the bright bring clear Kansas skies overhead.

Fabulous on an evening like tonight. Wouldn't fancy it on a rainy day! There's no cover whatsoever.

You may lose your pace, but you never lose your ability. The man is an inevitability!

    Simon, Solihull

You telling me this man is 38? Messi too old this, Messi to old that. Look at the veteran go.

    Fawaaz, USA

Messi's birthday is 24 June so for the final group game against Jordan and probably the following knockout stages, he will be 39 in those matches.

Messi is acting like it's his first ever World Cup goal with the celebrations, and with the ability he has - he never seems to age.

It is a brilliant through ball in to his feet and as you'd expect he takes it brilliantly.

  18. goal

GOAL - Argentina 1-0 Algeriapublished at 17 mins

    Lionel Messi

This one does count - and it is magical.

Lionel Messi marks his 200th appearance for Argentina with goal number 118 for his country and his 14th goal at a World Cup finals.

He is played the ball by Rodrigo de Paul and Messi picks up the ball and off he goes. He gets to about 25 yards out and strikes at goal.

Goalkeeper Luca Zidane gets two hands to it, but can't keep out the fierce effort. The world champions are ahead. It had to be Messi.

There have always been doubts about Argentina's defence and Romero in particular has had a difficult few seasons at Spurs. He needs somebody around him to keep him in place. They are being asked questions here.
