Portadown and Glentoran shared the spoils as they drew 0-0 in an entertaining affair at Shamrock Park.

The Ports, who picked up their first win of the season last week, will be frustrated to only come away with a point after spurning two great opportunities to pick up back-to-back victories.

Finn Flanagan blazed over from eight yards with the goal at his mercy after only two minutes, while a misplaced pass on 76 minutes resulted in a two-on-one breakaway, but Ben Kennedy was unable to get enough power on his shot.

Glentoran huffed and puffed for large parts with Ryan Cooney's cross coming back off the crossbar the closest they came to a winner as they move up to third in the Irish Premiership table.

Shamrock stalemate

The hosts should have gone in front in the second minute as the recalled James Teelan crashed a shot off the inside of the post after breaking free down the left-hand side.

The rebound fell nicely for Flanagan, eight yards out from goal and with Andrew Mills prostrate on the ground, but the forward blazed his first-time effort over the bar.

Glentoran finally clicked into gear in the 19th minute as Greg Sloggett's low cross flicked off Jordan Jenkins, forcing Aaron McCarey to get down and smother the ball at the near post.

The visitors then struck the woodwork with Cooney's looping cross beating everyone before coming back off the bar for Ross Clarke, who screwed the rebound wide.

James Singleton was next to threaten in the 32nd minute as he got on the end of a Conor McMenamin corner, but he failed to direct his header on goal.

The second half started in a similar vein as Lee Chapman threaded a superb long pass into Teelan's path, but the forward's first touch evaded him with the ball running through to a grateful Mills.

The Glentoran stopper nearly had a moment to forget on 54 minutes as he flapped at a Teelan cross, with half-time substitute Marcus Kane rescuing him by hacking the loose ball away.

The hosts continued to press with Baris Altintop heading a Matthew Carson free-kick inches over, before Flanagan blazed another effort off target.

Substitute Jordan Stewart showed his attacking intent at the other end as he drew a smart save out of McCarey on 67 minutes.

Portadown should have edged in front with 14 minutes to go as O'Mahoney King nicked the ball past the despairing slide of Kane to race away down the right.

With Kennedy waiting in front of goal, the ball inside was behind the forward and he failed to get the right purchase on the shot, allowing Mills to gather as the Ports squandered the chance to claim all three points.

Portadown manager David Jeffrey said it was "job done" in regards to his team keeping Glentoran's attack out.

"We asked the players before they went out, could they deliver a clean sheet, because that's something which has escaped us this far," Jeffrey said.

"If I'm being honest, over the piece, we had three, four really good chances, and I don't think that it would be unfair to say that, if we'd got the three points, no-one could say that you didn't deserve the three points.

"But I said to the players, we've got to build on last week, we've got to keep the same momentum going, and I thought, to a man, they were absolutely first class."

Paddy McCourt, is Glentoran's interim manager alongside Tim McCann, said he was disappointed with the attacking play of his side.

"I'm pleased with a point in terms of how we defended, we put our body on the line. That's what we have been doing the last few games," said.

"But I'm disappointed, if I'm being honest, with our own attack and play.

"When we had opportunities to either create a chance or get a shot away, it was probably below the level we expect with the players we have."
