Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot in 2022 and could do so again in 2026 as he is on eight goals, along with Argentina's Lionel Messi.

However, Messi is currently ahead in the Golden Boot race as he has four assists, compared to three from Mbappe, with assists the deciding factor if the number of goals is level.

There have been two English winners - Gary Lineker in 1986 and Harry Kane in 2018. There is a slim chance an Englishman could win this year, but either Kane or Jude Bellingham, both on six, would need to score a hat-trick against France and hope neither Mbappe or Messi score again.

There is still a trophy that players on both sides will be focused on: the Golden Boot.

France captain Kylian Mbappe has enjoyed a superb tournament and is currently level with Lionel Messi as this World Cup's joint top scorer on eight goals so far.

However, the Argentina great currently has the edge thanks to his four assists to Mbappe's three.

Goals in third-place play-offs do count towards the Golden Boot award, though, so Mbappe can still overtake the former Barcelona forward - albeit Messi will have the opportunity to respond in the final itself.

Should Mbappe score, or provide two assists, he would follow in the footsteps of Italy's Salvatore Schillaci, who clinched the Golden Boot in 1990 by scoring in the third-place contest against... England.

Of course, there is still a chance an England player might take the prize for the tournament's top scorer given both Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are just two goals behind Messi and Mbappe.

Given the Three Lions pair also have fewer assists, it would likely require a hat-trick to top the charts but you never know - and seeing top attacking talents go in search of goals is always fun to watch.

The Opta supercomputer views France as favourites to secure third place, winning the game inside 90 minutes in 50.7% of 25,000 pre-match simulations.

The next most likely result is a England win, at 25.6%, followed closely by a draw, which occurred in 23.7% of sims.

France defender Ibrahima Konate says the World Cup third-place play-off against England is a game that no one "wanted to play".

France boss Didier Deschamps on not wanting to play against England but still needing to try and win the game:

"I have a ​duty for this game," Deschamps said.

"It ⁠is not a friendly. It is a third-place ⁠playoff. The players, staff and I have the duty to reach this last objective.

"It is less important than the final. England ‌does not want to play this game and neither do we. But here we are.

"We have to set our eyes on that goal to be third and make this final goal ‌a reality. We have this duty when wearing this jersey.

"In my head I know it is my last match. I don't want anybody to cry. The end is near but life goes on."

Didier Deschamps will take charge of his 187th and final match as manager of the France national team.

His 121 wins are more than any other head coach for Les Bleus (drawn 35, lost 30).

France reached the World Cup semi-finals with a real swagger, steam-rolling opponents with an explosive front line, led by Kylian Mbappe's eight goals.

Yet Didier Deschamps' side never got going in their last-four encounter with European champions Spain.

Stifled and suffocated by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente's brand of possession football, they were unable to wrestle back control of the match after going behind to Mikel Oyarzabal's first-half penalty.

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro played a lovely one-two with Dani Olmo before slotting in the second after the break as France's expected fightback never materialised and Spain ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.

The truth is no-one really cares about this game.

Neither country really wants it, and you can imagine the mood in both camps and how deflated both sets of players are - they all probably just want to go home.

It is also very difficult to predict because it is likely to be France reserves against England reserves - but if it was France's best team against England's best, I would expect Didier Deschamps' side to win in his last game as boss after 14 years.

I still haven't got over England's 2-1 defeat by Argentina to be honest. I think we will look back at this tournament and view what Thomas Tuchel did after going 1-0 ahead as one of the worst coaching errors we've possibly ever seen.

You only have to glance back to the 2022 World Cup for the last duel between France and England.

The stage was the quarter-finals in Qatar for a first competitive meeting in a decade and the match was not short of dramatic twists and turns.

Aurelien Tchouameni’s long-range strike fired Les Bleus into the lead after just 17 minutes, but a penalty won by Bukayo Saka was hammered home by England captain Harry Kane shortly after halftime to level proceedings.

Both sides scrambled for a winning goal and Olivier Giroud was the provider for France, heading home an exquisite near-post delivery.

Harry Kane then missed a second penalty to help France clinch a 2-1 victory and progression to the semi-final.

After a gruelling schedule at this expanded World Cup, there is a chance both managers take the opportunity to rest some of their star players.

That in turn could provide a chance for those who have sat patiently waiting to feature at the tournament.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has yet to play a minute but with less pressure on this one, Tuchel could hand the talented youngster his World Cup debut and allow Declan Rice a breather after his recent illness.

Ollie Watkins might also get a run out after playing just six minutes so far, about as many as Ivan Toney, who emerged off the bench as England searched for an equaliser in the semi-final.

As for France, 2018 champion N'Golo Kante is also yet to feature and at 35, this is likely to be his last opportunity to play at World Cup.

Meanwhile, Manchester City playmaker Rayan Cherki has been limited to just 85 minutes at the tournament. Might Didier Deschamps give him a go from the start?
