Former Milton Keynes Dons and Carlisle United head coach Mike Williamson has been named as the new head coach at South Shields.

He replaces Ian Watson, who left last week to take over at League Two side Rochdale.

Williamson had been part of Watson's backroom staff at South Shields, becoming the club's director of performance and culture, but he will now lead the side, who lost in the National League North play-off final last month.

"Mike has quickly become a valued and influential figure within the football club," Mariners chairman Geoff Thompson told his club's website, external.

"His leadership qualities, knowledge of the game, and understanding of what we are trying to achieve made him the outstanding candidate for the role."
