Port Vale defender Jasper Moon says he is targeting promotion after joining the League Two club on a free transfer.

Former Barnsley and Leicester City academy graduate Moon, 25, was released by Burton Albion last month after three seasons with the Brewers, scoring his first goal for his former side in a draw with Exeter City to ensure they stayed in League One.

"I know the stature of the club," Moon told Vale's website, external, adding that his experiences with assistant coach Gary Mills at Burton and head of physical performance James Walsh at Barnsley had influenced his decision.

"As soon as I heard they were interested, I was buzzing to get it done. Promotion is what we want to look for - I know that's what the manager is looking for."

Vale boss Jon Brady said Moon's arrival reflected his ambition to create a "competitive" squad following a third-bottom finish in League One last season.

"He's a strong defender, an excellent professional and, just as importantly, a character who will help drive standards on and off the pitch," added Brady.

"We want people who are committed, ambitious and prepared to challenge themselves and those around them every day, and Jasper fits that profile perfectly."
