Notts County captain Matt Palmer says lifting the League Two play-off final trophy was the best moment he has ever had in football.

The 31-year-old led his side to glory at Wembley as the Magpies sealed a 3-0 win over Salford City to gain promotion to League One next season.

Palmer told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It was honestly the best feeling I've had in football probably, similar to when we got promoted from the National League.

"The feeling you get, you don't get that in life really. It's an unbelievable feeling, one that I'll treasure for the rest of my life."

Palmer has been at Notts for five years after arriving in the summer of 2021, and winning the club's player of the season award in his first campaign.

He said: "I'm obviously very proud to be captain of this football club.

"To be stood here now as a League One player, as a League One club, it's an unbelievable feeling, it's something that I believed could happen when I signed, (but) to actually go and do it is another thing."

About 20,000 of the 30,851 fans that basked in the sweltering Wembley heat were Notts supporters, topping the 15,000 in attendance for the second leg of their semi-final against Chesterfield which ended in a goalless draw.

"The fans, since day one, have been coming and they've been absolutely incredible, said Palmer.

"They give you an energy that's just different to normal. This promotion is just as much for them as it is for us, and I hope they enjoy it as much as we do."

The appointment of Martin Paterson as head coach this season saw him join a newly-created technical board, headed by the owners, who have influenced everything from recruitment to team selection and tactics.

Palmer added: "I'm over the moon for everyone involved at Notts because there's so many good people behind the scenes.

"Let's enjoy the summer and when we come back, we're playing against teams like Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday."

The 2026-27 English Football League season will begin on the weekend of 14-16 August.
