Emilio Gay is the first England opener to score a half-century on Test debut since Keaton Jennings in 2016. Gay is the first England opener to score a half-century on debut in a home Test since Andrew Strauss on this ground in 2004.

Well played young man, a really good knock, composed and unflustered. Just starting to surge through the veins, it looks like he's enjoying himself out there.

Emilio Gay reaches his half-century on Test debut!

It comes in a fine over for the England left-hander, 16 from it in total.

He starts by guiding the ball through backward point for two before throwing his hands at a wide one from Nathan Smith.

I think he wanted to get that a bit squarer but four is the end result.

And again. Much more control this time, opening the face and running the ball along the ground between the slips and gully for four more.

Two clipped through square leg takes him to the his fifty from 84 balls before a gorgeous flick through mid-wicket gives him a third boundary in the over.

As soon as Alex from Wales' comment (14:42) was posted, I knew a wicket was coming!

    Dom, Oxford

I blame Alex from Wales for that.

    Lucas, London

Alex in Wales, what did you do?

Emilio Gay drives nicely out to the fielder at deep point, just a single but that brings up the 100 for England.

Joe Root takes a couple of steps down the track to Kyle Jamieson as he faces up for the first time but then lets the ball go, wide of off.

Come home from the IPL? Jacob Bethell could have been hitting red balls all day every day since March and still not have kept that out.

That's tough for Jacob Bethell, that's an absolute pea roller. Good luck playing that, it rolled along. It's a poor pitch.

That has shot along the ground!

New Zealand have their breakthrough, a deserved wicket for Matt Henry but Jacob Bethell will feel rather unfortunate.

A length ball but it barely bounces and shoots under Bethell's bat to hit off stump.

The batter won't like it but England won't be too upset about that kind of dismissal when they start thinking about the fourth innings.

I've been impressed with the way that Emilio Gay's lined up. O'Rourke's been bowling fast, he's troubled Bethell but they haven't got flustered with it. They've read the situation.

Midway through Matt Henry's latest over and Tom Blundell decides it's time to come up to the stumps.

Immediately it makes a difference with an lbw shout against Jacob Bethell, not given, before an outside edge next ball.

Wide of slip and they get back for two.

Bethell and Gay are looking incredibly composed out there together, we can all rest assured the future of Test batting looks bright for England!

Kyle Jamieson replaces Will O'Rourke, who can feel a little hard done by not to have better figures than his 1-23 after eight very challenging overs.

There isn't the same pace from Jamieson but his record tells you that he is still a real threat.

Maiden over with Emilio Gay unable to beat the in-field on a couple of occasions.

Emilio Gay gets two after punching the ball through backward point but he had to be sharp to get back for the second.

Having done so he is drawn into playing at a ball wide of off by Matt Henry and is relieved to see slide just past the edge.

A single takes him to 37 and keeps him on strike.

They usually are, Alex. That's why it has been such a surprise to see them drop as many pretty straightforward catches as they have.

Meanwhile, Will O'Rourke is through his eighth over his spell - either side of lunch - and it's a maiden.

Interesting that NZ’s catching has been pretty poor so far this Test. Always had the impression that they are a very well-drilled fielding side.

    England's lead is creeping up.

Jacob Bethell clips Matt Henry through square leg for two before dabbing to point for a single.

The Kiwi seamer then hoops one well down leg, no chance for Tom Blundell and it's away for four byes.

New Zealand, in their search for wickets, have been guilty of slightly overpitching here. In the first innings, they bowled just 17% of their deliveries in the 3–6m length, which has now increased to 25%.

On the other hand, England have capitalised on that, scoring at 8.5 runs per over off that length, compared to 5 runs per over in the first innings.

This is a fast, fiery spell from Will O'Rourke as he continues to go at both Jacob Bethell and Emilio Gay.

The New Zealand quick is hovering around 90mph at the moment, Gay won't have faced this sort of pace too often in county cricket but is dealing with it well thus far.

Emilio Gay already looking a very good Test opener. Calm, compact, assured and playing with common sense to the situation of the game. Hoping for a big score and hoping that’s not the kiss of death!

Another good over from Matt Henry. The New Zealand bowlers are doing their bit but have been let down by a combination of poor (lack of) reviewing and catching since lunch.
