Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 103-3published at 23 overs

Decent knock by Ben Stokes, nonetheless. An interesting few days ahead.

Ravindra didn't see it. The Oval is a tricky ground to see at. Ravindra just didn't move!

  3. Eng 101-3published at 22.1 overs

Is Nathan Smith trying to buy Harry Brook's wicket here?

He's short one more and Brook mullers a pull in front of square. Rachin Ravindra is motionless as it goes across the ropes.

"How many wickets will England be down at close?" , more like will we still be batting?

    Michael, Bolton

I wish the England camp would stop talking about not performing in ‘moments’. Yesterday all day they bowled too short, and today the shot selection is awful. How about performing in long moments like a whole test?

    Neil, Hong Kong

  5. NZ 97-3published at 22 overs

A maiden from Kyle Jamieson, who looks like a Dolph Lundgren-esque blonde robot bad guy from the future.

  6. How's stat?!published at 16:31 BST

    Ben Jones

If you only counted his runs behind square on the off side (3,687 of them), Joe Root would still have more than the career tally of either Zak Crawley or Ollie Pope.

  7. Eng 97-3published at 21.3 overs

It's hope that gets you. Bob Hope. Shai Hope. Hope Solo.

    Any other Hopes?

    That's quite a big boundary! It's on.

They're really trying to throw some punches back at this disciplined New Zealand bowling attack.

They've done very well to get the first three wickets but the 50 partnership has come up. There's a few England flags waving about even though things are looking a little bit grim.

  9. 6 runs

    Eng 97-3published at 21 overs

Different ball, but Harry Brook isn't remotely bothered.

Nathan Smith is too short to Brook who pulls him for six over square leg off the final ball of the over.

Brook is 34 from 24 balls.

  11. Eng 91-3published at 21.5 overs

Too late, Adam, the nation has screengrabbed it.

If Harry Brook and Joe Root reach the close then...I'll stop short of completing that sentence as it's a big if.

Harry Brook plays and misses with a drive to a delivery outside off from Nathan Smith. Good take by Tom Blundell, who is still stood up.

New Zealand are unhappy with the ball and it doesn't fit through the measuring gauge so will need to be changed.

That's the third four that's gone through the cordon all in different places and with different techniques. That's a lovely shot. Silky!

  14. Eng 88-3published at 20 overs

    Still vacant at third.

Joe Root upper cuts Will O'Rouke and casually guides it over the cordon down there for another four.

I don't get the modern aversion to having someone at third. Just not funky enough?

That's a good effort to get it for four

  16. Eng 83-3published at 19.1 overs

Joe Root joins the England counterattack with back-to-back fours.

He too leans on the back foot, and cuts Will O'Rourke behind point for four. Nice use of the pace.

Similar length from O'Rourke and Root opens the face and guides it down.

Harry Brook's really looking to take on these New Zealand bowlers. There's quite a bit of frustration in that shot. He's absolutely slapped it over midwicket's head for four

  18. Eng 75-3published at 19 overs

He certainly is, Tuffers, he certainly is.

Harry Brook rocks back into his crease and pulls Nathan Smith for four this time. Magnificent timing.

The wicketkeeper is stood up but Brook appears to have got that out of his head.

Later in the over, Brook opens the face and picks up another four through the vacant third region. Isn't the third region nearly always vacant these days?

Harry Brook's just loosening up a bit now
