    In the last 20 times Ben Duckett has attempted a pull/hook in Test cricket, he's been out three times.

    The England vice-captain plays and misses at a Will O'Rourke delivery, displaying little footwork, but sends the next ball through third for four.

    He then pulls aerially out to backward square, but the ball drops in front of the fielder.

    He's tried to do the right thing here, Ben Duckett.

    He's deep in his crease because Will O'Rourke is a tall, bouncy bowler but in trying to keep it down it's hit the very toe of the bat and has ballooned towards mid-on where Matt Henry couldn't believe his eyes at what was looping towards him.

    A laborious innings from Duckett.

    There goes the third.

    Will O'Rourke bounces Ben Duckett from round the wicket, the England opener attempts a pull but can't control it and toe-ends his shot to Matt Henry at mid-on.

    England in deep trouble now, with defeat inside four days looking increasingly likely.

    I think there has been life in this pitch. In between the variable bounce it has been flat but theres been enough bounce over the last couple of days to encourage the fast bowlers. They just have to hang in there and be patient.

    New Zealand, bar a few overs from Rachin Ravindra, are basically a four-man attack in this match and they've consistently changed both bowlers in consecutive overs - Henry bowling with Jamieson, Smith with O'Rourke.

    So here is Nathan Smith, replacing Matt Henry.

    Joe Root picks up four early in his first over too, sending the second delivery through third.

    The England number four adds another boundary, riding the bounce to send Smith's ball racing to the ropes at backward point.

    New Zealand bring Will O'Rourke on for Kyle Jamieson and Joe Root sends his first delivery through point for four.

    Root then almost chops the last ball of the over onto his stumps - he instinctively takes a swat at the dropping ball but it is already past the stumps, he was in greater danger of accidentally charging into his wicket.

    Everyone is being very harsh on Jacob Bethell. The talent is clearly there, a ‘trust the process’ I think is needed.

    Sir Alastair Cook appears to be right about Jacob Bethell. James Rew had a day to forget yesterday, but at least he has 12 first-class centuries.

    I will never understand how Joe Public can have a definitive view on what a player should do. It's not like they have any idea about them as a person. Leave England and Jacob Bethell to work it out

    Joe Root takes a couple square off Matt Henry, then adds a single to mid-on at the close of the over to retain the strike.

    Meanwhile, up at Chester-le-Street, Ben Stokes has reached a run-a-ball 51 against Northamptonshire.

    We move to Richie Benaud's favourite score as Ben Duckett takes a couple of runs to mid-wicket off Kyle Jamieson.

    England have scored five runs off the last five overs - they're certainly not trying to swashbuckle their way to their target at present.

    Joe Root can't stop Matt Henry picking up a maiden though.

    For those wondering, it's looking pretty sunny at The Oval now, having been a touch grey earlier.

    Think the selectors need to review the decision to involve Jacob Bethell with such a lack of first-class action - ruining a potential good player by his inclusion.

    It might be an idea for Jacob Bethell to play the occasional first-class match rather than pitching up from limited-overs cricket and trying to be a Test number three batter.

    Methinks the experiment with Jacob 'wunderkind' Bethell is over. Send him back to county cricket for the rest of the season, a Lions winter tour and hopefully he'll fulfill his promise next year.

    A pretty poor review that.

    It was indeed a strike way outside the line - a case of New Zealand getting overly keen.

    They drop to two reviews, having lost that one.

    Joe Root doesn't play a shot and is struck on the pad by Kyle Jamieson.

    He looks a fair way outside the line, but New Zealand decide to go for their second review of the innings in the hope it nipped back a fair way.

    Ben Duckett faces the remaining three balls of the over without scoring.

    The opener raced to 36 from 25 balls in the first innings and was run out by Emilio Gay, he's on five from 17 today.
