New Zealand seamer Nathan Smith has 16 wickets in the series. He's the leading wicket taker on either side.

His wickets have come at an average of 23. Trent Boult took 16 in 2022 for the Kiwis but they came at a higher average of just under 29.

  2. Eng 200-8published at 49 overs

    Edged... short of the slips!

Nathan Smith finds Josh Tongue's bat with his first ball, but it falls in front of the cordon.

A maiden for Smith - his namesake Jamie will now face Mitchell Santner having not been on strike for any ball in the last four overs.

Enthusastic applause from the Trent Bridge crowd for England reaching 200 but hope of a win was effectively over when Joe Root was out.

  4. Eng 200-8published at 48 over

    Target 373

Josh Tongue faces all of Mitchell Santner's over, which finishes with five close fielders around the bat in addition to the wicketkeeper - three on the off side, two on the leg.

Santner's getting big turn on this day five pitch, and has Tongue grasping a bit, but the tail-ender does take a final-ball single to retain the strike once again.

  5. Eng 199-8published at 47 overs

    Josh Tongue in at 10.

He turns the final ball of Nathan Smith's over square for a single, retaining the strike.

A strange dismissal. It was bouncer length but not that short. I think Jofra Archer thought about ducking it, but realised he didn't need to drop it then ended up leaving his hands there.

Jofra Archer was trying to withdraw the bat but it flicked something on the way through to Tom Blundell. Archer could not believe it.

    Archer c Blundell b Smith 2 (Eng 198-8)

New Zealand have a breakthrough in the third over of the session.

Jofra Archer attempts to swivel away slightly to let Nathan Smith's delivery go through to the keeper and the ball brushes his raised bat, prompting cautious appeals from the tourists.

Archer can't believe it and hangs around in the crease for a while, before finally departing once the umpire belatedly raises his finger.

New Zealand are dangling the carrot to Jamie Smith in the field but quite happy to let him have a single to bowl more at Jofra Archer.

  10. Eng 198-7published at 46 overs

Mitchell Santner at the other end and he sends a delivery down the leg side which runs away for four byes.

Jofra Archer faces the entire over, surrounded by close fielders, and squeezes a last-ball single down to long-off to retain the strike.

  11. Eng 193-7published at 45 overs

Jamie Smith runs a quick single into the leg side, hurrying down the other end.

The throw comes in and Smith would just about have been ahead of a direct hit.

It's a lot to ask of England players at number nine, 10 and 11 to produce something from here.

Right, well, back to some action.

England resume on 191-7 with Jamie Smith on 47 and Jofra Archer yet to score - their target is 373.

Nathan Smith, who seemingly been bowling since the English Civil War, is going to take the first over after the interval.

As a couple of messages have pointed out in the inbox, while John Simpson is Sussex's club captain, Ollie Robinson has been captaining at Hove this season.

    Another candidate?

They made Bethell captain in the Ireland T20 series - considering the dearth of likely candidates (and there is a dearth, right?) they wouldn't think about promoting him to full-time now, would they...? Would they...!?

    Simon, Uffculme

Why not Ben Duckett? Seems to be one of very few out there actually trying for us at the minute. Got the experience and aside from Root is our best batsman.

    Jack, Brentwood

Can't look beyond Joe Root, his the only player I feel is deserving of a place every Test match. the rest are all replaceable.

    Rob, Chelmsford

Of the county captains, someone who is often overlooked but is a good captain and a fine keeper is John Simpson at Sussex. Lack of succession planning has been another Bazball failing. Simpson as keeper and Sam Curran as skipper.

Does Shoaib Bashir play when Ben Stokes isn't there, given he doesn't offer consistency? Does Jofra Archer, if you want four durable seamers?

There are a few questions emerging because of the Stokes retirement.

Most successful English captain of recent years, has an Ashes Test hundred… send for Rory Burns?

    David, London

Sam Curran to solve the all-rounder and captain issue.

    Zara, Maidenhead

The answer to our spin and captaincy woes are obvious. Bring back Jack Leach.

    Richard, a van somewhere

If we're looking at county captains with international experience there's only two reasonable options: Haseeb Hameed and Ollie Robinson. Neither are inspiring options but both not awful suggestions.

Smith's knock here might prevent this, but Sam Billings as a stopgap captain?

    Ed, Manchester

Craig Overton, all rounder, grown up, and captaining Somerset at the moment.

    Will, Dorset

Can't be a bowler. Buttler still has something to offer and has steel.
