  2. 'The hard work's just starting'published at 19:56 BST

More from Ollie Robinson on TMS: "The first over I couldn't feel my legs, I was so nervous. But to get the first wicket, the emotion coming was incredible. I started to come back down to earth and was able to get into my work.

"I was in a place where I never thought I'd play for England again. To get the text from Baz shifted my mindset and the hard work's just starting. To get back in the team, I knew the date of the first day of the Test and there was a lot of work. I've tried my best to get back in the condition for now and for today. I know there's a lot of hard work ahead. It's down to me to get back into that position.

"We have to clean them up quite quickly. If we can get a bit of quick wickets in the morning, hopefully there's a bit of sun tomorrow and we can get the batting boots back on."

England bowler Ollie Robinson speaking to BBC TMS:

"I'm so speechless about how it's gone, I couldn't have dreamt up that day. When we lost the toss and got stuck in, we were hoping to be batting all day, it obviously didn't go our way but to come out with the ball as a collective, we were right on it from ball one. It's been such a special day, I have no words."

"I think that atmosphere played a big role. When the sun came out it was doing a bit less but this evening when the cloud cover came over, both teams bowled well. Both teams hit the stumps a lot so credit to both teams. We've still got a a job to do and mop them up in the morning."

All eyes were on Emilio Gay this morning as he replaced Zak Crawley as Ben Duckett's opening partner.

He struck his first ball for four as he was offered a gentle full toss, but got a beauty from Jamieson that he couldn't do much about.

He'll probably be back out batting again on day two, which surely wouldn't have been on his Test debut bingo card.

Kyle Jamieson was the star for New Zealand, in a similar mould to Ollie Robinson - tall, not the quickest but with excellent skill to utilise the conditions and the Lord's slope.

He finished with 5-62 as England were bowled out for 140.

Opener Emilio Gay was his first victim, falling for eight on Test debut.

I can't judge the batting unit on today, it's been a bit of a lottery. On that surface you need a bit of luck. It's hard to assess batting on a pitch that's offered so much. Let's hope the pitch gets better.

I think England will go back to their Bazball method tomorrow. If they played a bit more expansively, you wouldn't criticise but I don't want Harry Brook to dance down to launch. He doesn't have to go down the wicket to launch it, he just has to get into the bowler's mind.

The ball nipped around all day for both sets of bowlers, through the air and off the surface.

Harry Brook played some erratic shots in his 56 but on such a tricky surface, it turned out to be the best way to go about it.

Glenn Phillips, on 31 not out overnight, looked the most likely candidate to play a similar role for the tourists.

England bowler Ollie Robinson on Sky Sports: "A remarkable day. When we looked at the pitch it looked it would play better than it did. After they bowled so well we knew we had to follow suit and to get them six down shows the hard work by everyone.

"It feels a bit surreal, I couldn't have dreamt being back. It was an amazing couple of hours, it's just so good to be back. Of course there were doubts - at Christmas time I thought I was never playing for England again. So to get back in and get support up there [in the dressing room], was so special today.

"It was so loud. I was in a bit of a daze and just trying to focus. The crowd were amazing, it's one of the loudest I've heard them here.

"I was just trying to wobble it and trying to hit that full length. The pitch is reacting more to the wobble seam than swing."

The pitch has done plenty. There's been a length that's skidded, that's why we've seen so many LBWs. I don't think it's been easy for batting.

If there was ever a day for Bazball, it was today. I didn't expect or thought that England would play that method but if there was any day, it was on that square.

I don't think it's a good pitch. The MCC would be the first to admit that there's something wrong with the square.

Robinson has just said that at Christmas time, when he wasn't featuring in England's Ashes plans, he didn't think he would ever play for England again.

    What a turnaround.

Ollie Robinson's comeback has been the story of the day.

After two years out of the side, this was his opportunity to prove himself and he delivered immediately with three wickets in his opening over.

The Lord's crowd were chanting his name, and he looked as if he could barely believe what was happening. He finished the day with 4-10 from six overs.

  13. Close of play - NZ 61-6published at 19.2 overs

That concludes an astonishing day of Test cricket.

16 wickets fell in the day, and New Zealand still trail by 79 with four wickets in hand.

Stay with us as we recap the day and bring you some reaction from both camps.

  14. Postpublished at 19:20 BST

Bad light may be putting an end to proceedings a little early here.

  15. NZ 61-6published at 19 overs

Nathan Smith drives nicely for two more as New Zealand edge closer to "surviving" the day.

  16. NZ 57-6published at 18 overs

Frustration for Ben Stokes, as he drifts down the leg side and Glenn Phillips helps it on its way for four more.

He has 31 off 32 balls, with Daryl Mitchell's 12 the only other contribution in double figures so far.

  17. NZ 51-6published at 17 overs

Glenn Phillips scampers a single from the final ball of Josh Tongue's over to keep the strike.

He holds the key to New Zealand getting anywhere near England's first-innings 140.

I reckon Phillips is going to have a go here.

  19. NZ 49-6published at 16 overs

Yep, definite change of approach from Glenn Phillips which is probably the right call on this surface.

He takes two more boundaries off Ben Stokes, punching down the ground for the first before driving through the covers.

'Robinson has got another one!' - Mitchell bowled for 12

Ollie Robinson has been the slowest among all bowlers so far at 80 mph. However, his accuracy has been outstanding, with 78% of his deliveries pitching on a good line and length - the most for any bowler today.
