Ok, Australia. We get it. You have shown fight but let's crack on now... those 3pm kick-offs are getting closer. Maiden.

  2. Aus 103-8published at 52 overs

If you're watching this on the tele, just look at the energy which goes through Simon Harmer's shoulder when he releases the ball. He's giving it every chance to spin if it finds a footmark. Nathan Lyon gloves one for four to bring up the Australian 100.

  3. Aus 98-8published at 51 overs

Aiden Markram slides one past Pat Cummins' outside edge. The Australian captain nods in approval. Game respects game.

  4. Aus 98-8published at 50 overs

    Target 288

Hands on heads in the South Africa slip cordon as Nathan Lyon scoops four over the four waiting catchers. Australia are playing a few extra shots now. I reckon Lyon doesn't back his defence as much as Cummins.

With the clouds rolling in, I just checked the forecast. Rain won't be saving Australia. This is Cape Town, not Old Trafford.

Completely agree with Timothy James. Batting for as long as you can here shows you won't fold and give in. Regardless of the outcome, batting in any situation in any Test is an opportunity that you should take pride in.

  6. Aus 92-8published at 49 overs

Pat Cummins, with flashes of fluorescent yellow on his upturned collars, shovels a loosener from the returning Aiden Markram behind square for four as the clouds roll in from above Table Mountain.

  7. Aus 88-8published at 48 overs

Shot of the day! Nathan Lyon stands tall and punches four through the covers off Kagiso Rabada. He swivels on a short ball to turn two round the corner, then hits another two into the large gaps in the off side.

My main takeaway from this is that England desperately need a frontline spinner in the team for the South Africa tour. Dan Lawrence isn't going to bowl us to victory.

  9. Aus 80-8published at 47 overs

Pat Cummins is showing unbelievable restraint - he's scored just five off 65 balls. Maiden over.

James (12:20), the gameplan is sell your wicket dearly and die in the last ditch. There are currencies other than winning, and one of them is pride. The day will come when they win a match because their opponents know they will never surrender.

  11. Aus 80-8published at 46 overs

My colleague, Matthew Henry, reckons he'd rather see Australia play some shots because they're not going to bat out for a draw. They probably won't, but there's more chance of that than them winning? And at least it shows they have some resolve?

In the middle, Lyon gets a streaky four through the slips. The rest of the over is a succession of plays and misses. Rabada is too good and Lyon suggests as much with an embarrassed smirk.

  12. Aus 76-8published at 45 overs

Simon Harmer has figures of 4-9 from his 17 overs. Australia's tail is holding him and South Africa up here though.

That's a fair point from Mike. The Aussies are putting a price on their wicket here. Cameron Green's brain fade aside, they have been very disciplined since lunch.

We can scoff but when have we seen England show the determination needed to bat for 12 overs and score just two. We may need that level of grit against both these teams soon.

  15. Aus 74-8published at 43.3 overs

Oh, hello. Nathan Lyon takes on Kagiso Rabada's short ball and pulls it from in front of his eyes for four.

  16. Aus 69-8published at 43 overs

Simon Harmer is almost getting too much turn here. He gets one to spit off the surface but it hits Pat Cummins' thigh pad on its way through to leg slip.

A couple of balls later and an inside edge pops up but drops in front of the fielder under the helmet. Things are starting to happen again.

As funny as this is, if you’re Cummins, Lyon or Hazlewood what do you even do? Defend and then eventually get out? Farm strike and get out? Just give up and get out? I have no idea what the game plan could possibly be in this position.

  18. Aus 67-8published at 42 overs

Australia's total is swelled by four byes but there's no runs off the bat. Incidentally, Nathan Lyon's longest batting stint is the 190 minutes he spent at the crease in the first Test for his 27 runs. He's only ever batted more than two hours on one other occasion.

Despite the lack of scoring, this is properly enthralling Test-match cricket.

Pat Cummins' clear gameplan of farming the strike and turning down singles makes Cameron Green's brain fade look even worse. Drinks.
