    Cover drives have been the feature of Emilio Gay's innings at Old Trafford this morning - but he can play off the back foot too.

    George Balderson offers up too much width and is steered through backward point for four.

    Ben McKinney drives spinner Noman Ali for four in the next over to bring up a 50 partnership with Gay and reach 1,000 runs in a season for the first time.

    Well done him!

    Kent v Glos 52-1

    A little bit of swing from Keith Dudgeon induces an edge as Ollie Price drives, but second slip Tawanda Muyeye can't get his fingers to it despite a full length dive.

    Price advances to 33 not out in fortuitous fashion - and the Gloucestershire total passes 50.

    Relegated Hampshire have their third wicket and a first bonus point.

    Oli Carter can't keep out one from Eddie Jack that keeps a bit low and is bowled.

    It's the nightmare start for Northamptonshire and the key man has gone now too.

    Division Two's highest run scorer this season departs for 26.

    Feeling the need to get his side's runs on the board, Ricardo Vasconcelos looks to drive down the ground and can only edge to Sam Robson who takes the catch at second slip.

    Delight on the balcony for the home side at Lord's. Northamptonshire's heads are down.

    Changes to the bowling at Edgbaston as Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard introduces himself and Olly Hannon-Dalby into the attack.

    Hannon-Dalby appeals for an lbw against Jonny Tattersall but the umpire is unmoved.

    Somerset v Surrey 50-1

    Surrey reach 50 runs on pretty much the hour mark of play.

    Rory Burns and Dom Sibley had looked very comfortable for the visitors but the former's aggressive batting style this morning came back to bite him as he top-edged a sweep to Jack Leach.

    That has given Somerset an unlikely breakthrough as the Surrey openers had been largely untroubled.

    A good twelfth over from an Essex point of view first sees Sam Cook restrict batter Zain Ul Hassan, who twice could have been out as there were appeals to no avail for LBW.

    That encouragement for Essex is immediately quietened by Glamorgan's profitable over as Asa Tribe collects two consecutive boundaries on leg-side - the first boundaries of the morning.

  13. Lancs v Durham 49-1

    Back to back fours for Ben McKinney.

    The first is a streaky edge, prompting Lancashire to call up an extra slip.

    But George Balderson overpitches with the next and is driven past mid-off.

    McKinney now only six runs short of 1,000 for the season.

    Sadly no Jimmy [Anderson] & Stokesy on show here at Old Trafford. Interesting to see George Balderson appointed captain for the game - maybe a sign of things to come next season.

    This has been a very challenging opening session for the Northamptonshire batsmen.

    Darnu Ferns is up again and thinks he has James Sales lbw but this one is doing too much and height looks a problem too.

    A great start to his first spell for the New Zealander, however.

  15. Kent v Glos 37-1

    It looks like a bowler-friendly surface but following the early loss of Joe Phillips, Gloucestershire are moving forward in positive fashion.

    Tommy Boorman unfurls his square cut again in Keith Dudgeon's latest over and that's four all the way.

    James Fuller, from around the wicket, traps Tom Clark lbw for 16 and Sussex lose their second wicket of the morning.

  17. 50 up for Worcestershire

    Worcs 52-2 v Derbys

    Worcestershire have lost their second wicket at New Road - Rehaan Edavalath going in the same fashion to Dan Lategan, caught at second slip off Mo Abbas, Martin Andersson taking by his left boot.

    The Pears, though, reach 50 in the 12th over as Jake Libby clips Andersson behind square for four.

    Leicestershire need batting bonus points to stay up so a big score is imperative. For the visitors to be 15-3 was far from ideal.

    Sheridon Gumbs got a good ball, Rishi Patel was perfectly set up by Chris Woakes and Stephen Eskinazi played a half-hearted drive. Two of three wickets you can't overly criticise, with Warwickshire rampant this morning thanks to Woakes and Ethan Bamber.

    Sol Budinger, if he gets in, will get the Foxes to 250 on his own. He's an uber-aggressive batsman. If I have another coffee though, I'll start getting heart palpitations if he carries on throwing arms at balls outside off stump with no foot movement.

    But in him and Jonny Tattersall, they have a good batting pair. They just need to stay in.

    A first wicket out of nowhere for Somerset!

    There's been very little for the home bowlers to get excited about so far but Jack Leach makes the breakthrough in the 14th over.

    Rory Burns has batted aggressively early on, shown by his two sixes, and has been sweeping to good effect, but he goes for one sweep too many and top edges to give Tom Abell a simple catch on the run.

    Is that the trigger that Somerset need to get motoring?

    A steady start for Nottinghamshire following a Jack White maiden.

    All-rounder George Hill, who has impressed this season for Yorkshire, is into the attack.
