Whoever thought of that at this level, they're not stupid in there but I cannot understand who possibly thought that was the right way to go about it this morning.

Even on the tactics, I don't quite know why they went short at Glenn Phillips. It was almost one tactic fits all and it cost them.

Bethell picks up his third wicket as he bowls Jamieson for 41

If you cast your mind back to this morning, England's bowling tactics - especially their short-pitched bowling - was not exactly met with universal approval.

Part-time spinner Jacob Bethell ended up the pick of the attack with 3-26.

I was expecting Jofra Archer to start from the pavilion end, one over with the old ball and then take the new ball. To think that Jofra didn't bowl for 91 mins, as the day has got longer and longer, that decision looks more silly by the minute.

If someone like Jofra has got a problem, surely you would have got him warm at around 10:50, bowled him one over with the old ball and then said give us four with the new ball, then come off.

For him to have fielded for 91 minutes, it was just a very strange look for the team. We had Jofra warming up for about 40 minutes. He was bowling to mid on for quite a while. It probably wasn't his decision, it was probably taken out of his hands by the medical team.

That's a real good day for New Zealand, not a great one for England. Started off really, really badly. We've seen a couple of good innings in there but when you set the tone as they did in that first innings, it's hard to pull it back.

This is a bit of a nightmare for England now. All their bowlers have got to bat and bowl their hearts out tomorrow. Temperatures are forecast to be in the 30’s. Good luck, fellas.

It's been a strange day. It didn't start well for England, it all felt a little bit scruffy.

What are you doing playing a shot like James Rew did at 10 mins to 7?!

Will O'Rourke with what will probably be the penultimate over the day.

Jordan Cox works the Kiwi quick to mid-wicket for a couple then jabs to point for a single. Jofra Archer sees off the remainder of the over.

Just enough time for one more over.

New Zealand’s bowling attack is night and day better than England's. Batting is often the talk but our bowling line-up since Stuart Broad and James Anderson has never been the same.

Brendon McCullum strokes his goatee beard, in the manner of Ming the Merciless, before settling into a conversation with James Rew in the dressing room.

Still a good pitch for batting, this.

New Zealand tested James Rew a little bit, that's why they brought Will O'Rourke on. Rew was looking to hit that for six.

    Rew c Mitchell b O'Rourke 24 (Eng 217-6)

Short from Will O'Rourke and James Rew decides to take on the bumper.

He ends up gloving a hook shot - pulling a hand off of the bat - behind and Daryl Mitchell scuttles back from second slip to gobble up the catch.

With a couple of overs left that wasn't really the way for Rew to play.

  18. Eng 216-5published at 55 overs

James Rew content to see off another maiden from Nathan Smith. The shutters have come down at The Oval as we edge towards the close of play.

New Zealand's attack have been very consistent in their threat today.

James Rew got away with one there.
