Karsten Warholm is the outstanding favourite to win the European 400m hurdles title for an unprecedented fourth time. The 30-year-old Norwegian holds the 33 fastest times in history by a European.

Nearest rival Emil Agyekum has set a German record 47.45 this year, while Italy’s Alessandro Sibilio ran a 47.50 national record when second to Warholm in the 2024 European final.

There is no British interest in this final, for which the athletes are now on track and getting ready to race.

On Audrey Werro's fall in the 800m semi-final... It wasn't a soft fall at all - her arms went to the side and her legs went up and it went all on the chest. She seemed fine in the interview after and when she got back to the hotel, they said she was laughing and joking but once that adrenaline wears off, there's definitely going to be some sort of pain or inflammation in the chest.

It's going to be interesting to see how she comes back from that.

Former Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford: "It was a hard hit on the floor. These tracks are incredibly hard, especially when they've been sun-baked.

"It really was a difficult thing to watch, and you're just hoping at that point [that] there's no serious injury."

Former women's marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe: "Athletes know if that happens and you go down, you have to get up and finish.

"That is the only criteria that you're going to make it through. If you don't do that, you have no chance of being advanced through to that final. You could see she was not comfortable."

And Werro herself...: "I was feeling great but unfortunately I don't know, something happened and then I was on the ground."

Looking ahead to tonight's showpiece race in around an hour and a quarter, the women's 800m has already drawn headlines this week.

Audrey Werro suffered a dramatic fall in the women's 800m semi-final that put her place in tonight's showpiece in doubt.

Werro - who ran the fastest time for 43 years earlier this season - led from the start in the first semi, but crashed to the floor on the final bend in Birmingham.

The Swiss 22-year-old got back to her feet a moment later and finished the race in last place, grimacing and clutching her chest.

Her appeal was successful, with footage showing France's Anais Bourgoin had hit Werro's right foot with her left hand.

An earlier angle had appeared to show Werro clipping her own leg before falling.

Her progression means there will be 10 finalists, instead of the usual nine.

World and European silver medallist Jorinde van Klinken, who will be first to throw in this final, has thrown the furthest by a European this year.

Her Netherlands compatriot, 2023 European under-23 champion Alida van Daalen, has a season’s best of 69.31m, which puts her second in Europe this year.

Germany’s Shanice Craft is a three-time European bronze medallist and has thrown beyond 66m twice this year – putting her in contention for a fourth podium.

There are no British athletes in this final.

Good news for Great Britain in the men's high jump final. Joel Clarke-Khan and Kimani Jack have both cleared the opening height of 2.18m at the first try.

That will help settle any early nerves, but there's a long way to go.

Oleh Doroshchuk is the indoor world and European champion and has cleared 2.33m this season. The Ukrainian is one of five men in the final to have jumped at least 2.30m in 2026, with Commonwealth bronze medallist Kimani Jack second in that list with a 2.31m personal best in May – the best clearance by a Brit since 2020

The US-based Londoner has improved by 10cm this year, but he was beaten to the British title by Joel Clarke-Khan, who has overcome injuries and will be cheered on by his family from Worcester.

Czech Republic’s Jan Stefela won European indoor silver and World Championship bronze last year, while revered Italian Gianmarco Tamberi has struggled for form and fitness since retaining the European title two years ago with a championship record of 2.37m

And that's a wrap on the shot put. Portugal's Jessica Barreira set the best marker at 15.02m and she gets 862 points to move up to ninth.

Kate O'Connor of Ireland stays in second but she's lost ground on Poland's Adrianna Sulek-Schubert, trailing by 47 points.

GB's Katarina Johnson-Thompson was 10th before the shot put, but a 12.79m best attempt - which was 21st overall - sees her drop down to 15th.

Her compatriot, Jade O'Dowda has moved up one place to 11th thanks to 13.69m throw.

It's tough, Megan led it out for so many laps and kept that pace to try and push it as much as she could. But there were so other many women in that race who had that extra speed to take it off after their last two final laps.

I'm sure she will be disappointed but that's the way the race pans out at times.

Megan had a real go and I think that was the best she could do, I don't think there was anything wrong with her race. She just didn't have that bit extra to give.

Megan Keith was the leader for a long time, but ran out of gas in the final two laps and ultimately falls back to eighth place.

She gave her all and went toe to toe with the best for a long while, but ultimately didn't have quite enough. She doesn't look too disappointed as she congratulates her competitors.

Of the other Brits, Izzy Fry finished 16th with Poppy Tank 23rd.

Nadia Battocletti is the best female distance runner in Europe by quite some distance. When she opened the taps, no-one could respond.

The Italian has completed the European double-double - winning the 5000m and 10,000m at subsequent continental championships.

Maureen Koster of Netherlands takes silver, Jana van Lent of Belgium wins bronze.

It's tough mentally to keep looking up at the screen and not seeing anyone detach from that leading group but Megan Keith has to stick at this. I think she will back herself against Van Lent but she can't compete against Battocletti and Koster at their best.

The front four have opened up a big gap to the rest of the field. It appears almost certain the three medallists will come from Keith, Van Lent, Battocletti and Koster.
