The Government recognised the national importance of the Quantocks and designated them as an AONB on 9 May 1956. The hills - characterised by a mixture of different heaths, woodlands and coastline - are unique, and several areas are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Chris Edwards, Manager of the Quantock Hills AONB Service, said: "2006 will be a very special year for the Quantock Hills, not only to celebrate their natural beauty and rich heritage, but also those who live and work here. "The first will be displaying posters celebrating the Quantock Hills, designed by three schoolchildren. "In August 2005, we asked local primary schools to take part in a drawing competition. "Children aged between 5 and 12 sent in drawings of what they felt was special about the Quantock Hills to celebrate the 50th anniversary. "The three winning pictures will be turned into posters and displayed in our offices as well as other events throughout the year, including Somerset Arts Week."
