David Childs

British euphonium soloist David Childs made his BBC Proms debut with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001, and returned in 2004 to give the London premiere of Alun Hoddinott’s concerto The Sunne Rising - The King Will Ride. Most recently he appeared at this year’s Proms with the Black Dyke Band.

He is a keen advocate of new music and has given premieres of 16 concertos for euphonium, including the US premiere of Sir Karl Jenkins’s Euphonium Concerto at Carnegie Hall, New York, and the world premiere of Paul Mealor’s Euphonium Concerto at the Welsh Proms. In 2022 he gave the first performance of a transcription for euphonium of Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and earlier this year he gave the US premiere of Sir James MacMillan’s euphonium concerto Where the Lugar Meets the Glaisnock with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Edward Gardner.

A product of the British brass band scene, David Childs is a former member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the Cory Band, with which he was Principal Euphonium for 10 years, under the baton of his father and former teacher, Robert Childs. He holds the position of Distinguished Research Professor of Euphonium at the University of North Texas.

Mae David Childs wedi ei fagu ym myd bandiau pres Prydain, ac mae’n gyn-aelod o Fand Pres Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Prydain a Band Cory, lle bu’n Brif chwaraewr Ewffoniwm am 10 mlynedd, o dan arweiniad ei dad a’i gyn-athro, Robert Childs.
