Eric Knowles visits Nottingham’s Gothic revival cathedral to learn how conservators are revealing 19th-century artwork under decades of plaster and paint. Designed in 1842 by architect Augustus Pugin, the cathedral’s interior was whitewashed in the 1960s. Pugin is widely admired for his work on some of Britain’s most famous buildings, including the Palace of Westminster. Conservator Ana Logreira shows Eric how they are using digitally created stencils to renovate the cathedral’s historic interior.
At Southwell Racecourse in Nottinghamshire, red team uncle and niece Russ and Lily are up against twin sisters Angie and Tamsin in blue. With just 60 minutes to buy three items, Russ makes an early pit stop at a stall selling boxed toy cars. Meanwhile, a marcasite brooch catches the sisters’ attention, but expert Irita Marriott isn’t convinced it will dazzle the bidders.
Trying to hammer out a profit for the teams in Nottingham is auctioneer Hettie Jago, who has her eye on the jewellery among the lots.
