Stevenage Stories: Welcome to Stevenage

4 Extra Debut. Paul Garner explores the story of Britain's first New Town through archive recordings, local voices and visits to some of Stevenage's best-known landmarks.

As Radio 4 Extra celebrates the 80th anniversary of Britain's first New Town, Paul Garner heads to the streets of Stevenage to discover the story behind one of the country's most ambitious post-war planning projects.

From archive recordings of New Town architect Lewis Silkin to conversations with local people, Paul explores how Stevenage came to be what it is today. Importantly, we'll find out whether there's such a thing as a Stevenage accent and what it sounds like!

Along the way, Paul visits the town square and iconic Clock Tower, meets the Mayor of Stevenage, and uncovers stories at the Museum beneath the Church of St Andrew and St George.
