A Fork in the Road

The extraordinary tale of farmer Ken Wild's 18th century farmhouse - marooned in the middle of the M62. From 2003.

Sheep farmer Ken Wild lives on an island in an 18th century farmhouse.

Not unusual - except that this island is surrounded by the six lanes of the trans-Pennine M62 motorway.

In a tapestry of words, sound and specially composed music, we reveal the extraordinary story of Ken and his wife Beth.

We also enter the minds of the motorists who regularly pass their farm, which sits marooned in the middle of the motorway.

The simplicity of Ken's existence contrasts with the complexity of the modern lives carried by the motorway. The two worlds frequently collide - often with fatal consequences.

Presented by Gary O'Donaghue.

Producer: Laurence Grissell

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2003.
