Inside Out

Monday 24 October
7.30-8.00pm BBC ONE

The 11 regional Inside Out programmes come together for a special episode asking if people are getting value for money from Britain's universities in light of the increase in tuition fees.

This includes a consumers' guide to university tuition fees, explaining how the loan system works and how to beat the fees, presented by financial guru Alvin Hall with savings expert Martin Lewis.

The programmes also report on a specially commissioned survey of 16- to 18-year-old A-Level students to find out how the fees increase has influenced decisions on whether to go to university. The programmes also feature:

  • BBC North East and Cumbria – Chris Connel finds out why students in one Northumberland town are turning their backs on university.
  • BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire – self-made Yorkshire millionaire Terry George, who left school at 16 without any qualifications, looks at alternatives to higher education.
  • BBC North West asks what the best way is to help young people into work; whether university courses are a waste of money, raising false expectations; and if it is better to do an apprenticeship instead.
  • BBC East reveals how more than half of recent graduates in the region are struggling to find a job.
  • BBC East Midlands looks at alternatives to university and what the region's employers think of degrees.
  • BBC West Midlands – music industry mogul Pete Waterman believes students – including his own daughter – are wasting their time and money. He meets with a professor at Staffordshire University to exchange views.
  • BBC South looks at how A-Level students are deciding which universities are the best value.
  • BBC South East – former NUS President Aaron Porter asks the region's Vice Chancellors whether people are losing sight of what universities are for and whether students are getting value for money.
  • BBC West explores whether it is still worth going to university despite the fees.
  • BBC South West finds out the best courses in the region for employment prospects and future earnings.

HANDMADE IN BRITAIN
Ceramics – A Fragile History Ep 3/3

Monday 24 October
9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR

Studio pottery has become a great British triumph in the story of modern art, but it took an industrial revolution and two world wars to really start breaking the boundaries between art and craft.

The final episode from the series explores the story of pottery from the mass-produced ceramics of the Industrial Revolution through to the imaginative and provocative ceramics of today. From the Arts and Crafts movement, spearheaded by William Morris, to the rebirth of handmade pots by Bernard Leach, to the sculptural ceramics of Hans Coper and the site-sensitive work of Edmund de Waal, handmade pottery has accelerated rapidly over the past 100 years, planting itself firmly at the heart of the British art world.

Drawing on the expertise and comments of contributors including Grayson Perry and Edmund de Waal and reviving archive interviews with studio potters Bernard Leach and Lucie Rie, this programme uncovers a whole host of revolutionary artist potters.

Ceramics – A Fragile History is part of an ambitious year-long BBC Four partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum, Handmade In Britain; the most wide-ranging and ambitious exploration of decorative arts ever on British television.
