The Essay – Under The InfluenceEp 5/5
Monday 1 to Friday 5 December
11.00-11.15pm BBC RADIO 3

Following the success of the first series last year, Under The Influence returns with essays by five leading poets about their relationship with the work and life of a writer who has affected them deeply.

Fred D'Aguiar was born in Britain, but spent his childhood in Guyana. He returned to the UK where he trained as a psychiatric nurse before beginning to write poetry, plays and novels. He now lives in the USA and teaches at Virginia Tech. His poetry covers the massacre that happened on his campus, in work which is as journalistic as it is imaginative.

Fred is profoundly influenced by Wilson Harris who, though he began by writing poetry, now writes essays and novels. Harris lives in the UK, though his heart and mind are in the hinterland of Guyana – where he was born in 1921. He worked as a surveyor in the savannah and the rainforests and these form the setting of much of his work. His writing often departs from familiar forms, and leans towards abstract complexity. Fred sees him as a visionary and a philosopher working in fiction.

George Szirtes is among Ian McMillan's guests this week and talks about his latest collection of poems, which bring together old and new work. Born in Hungary, Szirtes came to Britain in 1956 and is best known as a poet, translator, writer and librettist. He won the TS Eliot Prize for his collection of poems, Reel, in 2005.

Also in the programme, author Steven Hall, whose science fiction thriller debut, The Raw Shark Texts, portrays a man on the run from a conceptual shark that wants to eat his personality, presents a brand new commission written especially for The Verb.

Friday Play – Binge Drunk Britain: The Musical
Friday 5 December
9.00-10.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Paul Dodgson's drink-sodden comic odyssey tells the story of a man's attempt to get home to his wife, in Newport, after a lads' night out in Bristol.

It is the early hours of Saturday morning and Oddie, having kissed goodbye to his wife, Penny, and abandoned the flatpack he was meant to be assembling, finds himself in a most peculiar situation. Along with his mates, Tank and Shave It, he wakes up at Severn Bridge services, face down in a bowl of salad. Gradually, it all comes back to him: the night out in Bristol that had begun so well; the rounds of lager with vodka chasers; the stories; the laughs; the white bare legs and tottering heels; and the traffic cones on heads. But, after an incident at Psycho's Kebab Shop and a run-in with the law, the trio found themselves without jackets or wallets at a subterranean nightclub, where Shave It started behaving in a very strange way.

When Oddie eventually arrives back home in Newport, at dawn, he finds that all is not quite as he left it.

Paul Dodgson is a radio writer, producer and composer.

The Friday Documentary – The World Without...Ep 2/2
Friday 5 December
9.05-9.30am BBC WORLD SERVICE

Fred Dove concludes this intriguing, witty, two-part series that explores what the world might be like if something taken for granted had simply never existed.

Inventive, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, each programme takes as its premise the notion that something very familiar throughout the globe has never existed. What would this mean for daily life around the world? What might we be using instead today? What other developments depended on it? Combining serious investigation with light-hearted speculation, Fred visits appropriate locations and talks to a wide variety of experts as he teases out the often bizarre implications.
