Donald Macleod continues to explore the music of Handel using John Mainwaring's Memoirs Of The Life Of The Late George Frederic Handel (1760) as his primary guide. In this second programme, Donald discusses Handel's formative tour of Italy – cataloguing his prodigious successes at the opera houses and noble courts and considering Mainwaring's coy hints of a secret love affair with one of his leading ladies. There are, however, considerable gaps in Mainwaring's version of this crucial period in Handel's career. Handel subsequently took up an appointment at the court of Hanover, but when he quickly abandoned this post to seek his fortune in London, Mainwaring was anxious to defend his hero's actions – suggesting that he couldn't return to Germany because he may have developed a morbid fear of sea travel. Music featured in today's programme includes Handel's Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno; Tacete, ohimè, tacete; and Utrecht Te Deum. To tie in with the bi-centenary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe in January 2009, Joanne Harris looks at the women in Edgar Allan Poe's life and the influence they had on his stories. In the second Essay of the week, she presents a compelling argument that the enigmatic and controversial American writer was a feminist at heart – in gothic fiction, "murder is, after all, the highest form of flattery." Joanne Harris gained international recognition following the publication of her 1999 novel, Chocolat. Her books are now published in more than 40 countries and have won a number of British and international awards. She cites Poe as one of her favourite writers. Solihull was once called the Mayfair of the Midlands – its leafy streets were home to professionals and the very wealthy, making it an exclusive and upmarket address. In recent years, an influx of aspiring and newly wealthy working classes have been moving into the big houses and sending their children to the private schools. Stuart Jeffries visits his old home town to investigate what new money can and cannot buy. The programme investigates what part of their backgrounds they want to leave behind and what part of their roots they want to keep. Images that would once have sparked an obscenity trial are now only a mouse-click away, making hardcore and violent porn routinely available in the home. Penny Marshall examines the effect that porn's instant availability is having on the growing number of users, their families and relationships. Penny talks to those who use and provide online porn and to those who are concerned about it. Fuelled by a combination of access, anonymity and affordability, online porn has rapidly expanded. In its wake come casualties, including couples trying to repair trust and intimacy dented by persistent and secretive online access to porn sites. Psychologists warn that teenagers are also in danger of having their understanding of sexual relationships permanently damaged by what they see online. A recent survey suggested that 90 per cent of eight-to-16-year-olds had accessed porn online, most whilst doing their homework. Penny examines the effect of online porn on the sexual landscape in which today's children are growing up. And she meets psychologists and some of the couples they are seeking to help. From the safety of the keypad it's possible to embark on almost every sexual fantasy imaginable. Some users find it difficult to control the time they spend online and the impact this use of porn sites has on their family lives. Set against this are the experiences of users who claim to find a happy medium and argue that internet porn can be of benefit, opening new avenues to sexual satisfaction. The programme includes material recorded at the Family Online Safety Institute's Conference in Washington DC, bringing together many of the leading experts and agencies in the US and UK working in this area.
