Drought extended across the whole of Wales

A drought has officially been declared across the whole of Wales.

The announcement, by Natural Resources Wales, comes in response to record-low river levels, dry ground and widespread wildfires.

The organisation added that the conditions were also affecting wildlife, farming and forests in the region.

Last week parts of north and mid Wales became the first areas in the UK to enter drought conditions, however the drought has now been extended, with the country on course for its driest July in nearly 200 years.

Natural Resources Wales is the organisation that looks after Wales' natural environment and natural resources.

It said that the recent high temperatures across the country were causing the conditions to "deteriorate".

The nationwide announcement means rivers will be checked more closely, and people could be given stronger advice on how to save water.

However, it does not mean there is an immediate risk to water supplies for homes and businesses.

Welsh water companies say reservoirs still have plenty of water after a wet start to the year.

Rhian Thomas, from Natural Resources Wales, said the effects of the recent dry weather had been "clear to see".

She added that teams were closely watching river levels and weather forecasts.

"It's more important than ever that we all use water wisely. Every drop we waste is less water for our rivers and wildlife when they need it the most."

The hot, dry weather has also led to a number of wildfires across Wales in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, a large fire in the Rhinogydd mountains in Gwynedd was so big, smoke could be seen from space.

Specially trained wildfire teams, including a helicopter crew, were sent to tackle the blaze.
