UK's chief rabbi: A dark day for British Jewspublished at 17:12 BST
Image source, Getty ImagesThe UK's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis says it is "truly a dark day for British Jews" following the announcement of UK sanctions against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
He condemns the proposals as "gesture politics" that would harm the safety of Jewish people who had faced a "wave of extremism" and said they would do nothing to advance peace.
In a statement on X, he says: "Today our government has chosen to ignore the deep concerns expressed by so many of us."
"These measures will succeed only in bolstering the very extremism they seek to target," he adds.
