Burnham's plans for council housing could 'utterly transform' UK, says Shelter chiefpublished at 16:27 BST
Charities have also been reacting to Andy Burnham's first speech since he launched his bid to replace Keir Starmer as Labour leader.
Anti-poverty charity The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has said Burnham is "right to focus on devolving more power" to where people live, but "strong communities can only flourish when they're resilient to shock".
Chris Belfield, chief economist at JRF, says "people can’t wait 10 years to see an improvement", which is why "we need a plan for living standards that includes bold action on rent costs, energy prices, social security and employment protections".
Housing charity Shelter says Burnham's plans for council houses "has the potential to utterly transform" the country.
"Any government that is serious about fixing life’s foundations must start by delivering a new generation of social rent homes," says Shelter chief executive Sarah Elliott.
Meanwhile, manufacturers' association Make UK, says the next prime minister needs to tackle "the UK's high costs of doing business, particularly industrial energy prices, business rates and employment costs".
"The next government must act quickly to restore competitiveness and unlock investment across UK industry," says Make CEO Stephen Phipson.
