Image source, UK ParliamentAt this week's PMQs, Prime Minister Keir Starmer fielded questions over the police's handling of the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, and was pressed on welfare reforms.
Meanwhile, Reform UK's leader Nigel Farage and Starmer clashed over the former's "two-tier policing" claims.
Here's a look back at what we heard:
On Henry Nowak's murder
- Starmer said Nowak's family "have shown extraordinary dignity" and acknowledged there are "serious questions to answer" over the police handling of the incident
- He added there is "no justification for more violence and disorder" and attacks on police overnight in Southampton, in which 11 officers were hurt, are "disgraceful" - follow our live coverage of the protests
- Badenoch shared her condolences, and said Nowak's death "must be a wake up call to the entire country and our institutions that every life matters"
- Farage asked the PM to take action against "two-tier policing", saying the "anger" seen in the Southampton protests on Tuesday night could get worse if the public loses trust in the police. The PM denied the existence of two-tier policing, and accused Farage of seeking to exploit the tragedy
On the welfare bill
- Badenoch questioned why the King's Speech - which outlines the government's law-making plans for the coming year - did not include action on welfare, and said "benefits alone have risen by £20bn" since the PM came into office
- Starmer blamed the Conservatives for the rising welfare bill. He said under their government, it soared by £88bn and nearly three million people were written off
- Badenoch blamed the Covid-19 pandemic for the rising welfare bill under the Tories and accused Labour of asking them to "spend more" during that period
- The Tories broke the welfare system but Labour was reforming it, Starmer said
