Using mobiles while driving to incur tougher penalties

Drivers who use a hand-held mobile phone while driving could face tougher penalties, if government safety plans are approved.

Ministers are planning to increase fixed penalty fines from ÂŁ100 to ÂŁ150, and to raise the number of penalty points drivers receive.

Motoring groups have welcomed the plans, which will be consulted on in 2016.
