How old are they?

The earliest recognisable characters date back over 3,500 years, and were discovered carved into tortoise shells and cattle bones. This makes written Chinese the oldest system of writing in continuous use as a living language. Although older examples of Egyptian writing have been found, hieroglyphs are no longer used to write any living language.
