The vision

The site of the former Swanscombe cement works will be transformed and a new village centre will provide community facilities such as a health centre, convenience stores and a range of leisure facilities. Building work to the west of the peninsula will start first and has been earmarked for a new 'urban village'.

Nearly half of the site will be dedicated to open space with new parks and recreation areas, including playing fields, together with a new managed conservation area for wildlife.

Where is it?

The peninsula falls within both the Boroughs of Dartford and Gravesham, and juts out into the river Thames opposite Grays in Essex.

When is it happening?

The development will be completed in phases over a five to ten year time frame. Development east of the High Speed 1 is not expected to start before 2011.

History

Swanscombe Peninsula was, until 1993, the site of Swanscombe Cement Works.

• 500 acre site
• Up to 25,000 square metres (270,000 sq ft) of new business accommodation will be constructed
• New community facilities, including up to 2 primary school, a health centre and shops

Who's involved?

Lafarge Cement UK owns the land. Land Securities has a development agreement with Lafarge Cement UK for the redevelopment of Swanscombe Peninsula.
