The most distinctive voice in GAA broadcasting and a hero for fans of Gaelic games the world over, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh’s radio commentary on football and hurling is the stuff of legend. Whoever said that they prefer radio to television as ‘pictures are better on the radio’ must have been thinking of Mícheál’s commentary.
He was born in Dún Síon, close to Dingle in County Kerry on 29th August 1930. He commentated on his first match for RTÉ in 1949 and is still commentating today.
