I have always been interested in Military History, in particular in the 20th Century.
Although I was born a year after the Second World War ended I have always had a special interest in that conflict as I grew up with the knowledge that my uncle, who was killed in the War, had served a Spitfire pilot in the Battle of Britain. In fact, as soon as I was old enough to appreciate its significance, my mother gave me her late brother's Pilot's Log Book, which is still one of my treasured possessions.
Some 20 years ago I became interested in Family History, and one of the tasks I have undertaken has been to fully research my Uncle's career in the RAF, not just as a pilot, but as a Flight Mechanic before the War.
Hopefully others will find his story of interest; not one of the well-known 'Aces' of the Battle of Britain, but an ordinary man who served his country and who ultimately gave his life in that service.
