Fred and Olive Williams with children Olive and Frank. Middlesbrough about 1942

Olive Brunskill ( formerly Olive Williams ) remembers going into the bomb shelters on Carter Street in Middlesbrough where her family lived during the war. As soon as the sirens went off they would hurry out, but Granma Sara wouldn`t go. She refused to leave the house, instead she would hide under the stairs till the all clear was given.

The many shelters were shared by several families. Fred built a couple of bunk beds in their shelter so that they could get some sleep during the long nights, but often there would be sing songs and concerts to keep everybody`s spirits up.
