My father (aged 63) and I were walking Ginny the dog. We were halfway up the Mount in the Dane John Gardens when without warning there came the whistle of a bomb and a very loud bang. The German plane flew right over us. I could see scratches on the tail fin. We could see a cloud of brick dust in the sky in the general direection of our house, so Dad cut short our walk and we went home as fast as he was able to walk. The bomb had hit a nearby street, Cossington Road. Apparently the target was Telephone House. Since the Germans were about to invade it was an obvious target. Six houses had been hit. Dad took me to have a look but soon took me back home. Our baker had delivered our bread and Mum called him back to tell him a bit of gossip she had heard. The bomb dropped just as ha was riding off on his bike. He came back later to thank Mum for saving his life. His next call was at one of the bombed houses!
