We sailed at midnight spirits high
Although we knew that some would die.
The sea was choppy,in fact was rough.
We knew this exercise was tough.
We manned the craft, we knew the drill
From now on its all uphill.
A sudden bang and in a blink we were landed in the drink.
Shells were banging, bullets whining
All around us mates were dying.
I've heard the shot and smelled the smoke,
And I realised it was no joke.
I lost my mate of many months,
After all this time it still brings tears.
I fought my way through the whole campaign and still I wonder why
All those men of yesteryear, brave yet fearful had to die.
Now my age is 84 and still some countries still at war.
Will this madness never end.
I pray to God it will my friends.
