Following yet another win at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2008, we caught with grower Raymond Evison at his greenhouse.

With a ninth win at the 2008 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, for his Guernsey project, Raymond Evison has become known in the island for his trademark clematis flowers.

He described taking part in the flower show, at which he has won in excess of 20 gold medals over the years, as "thrilling", and describes himself as a "showman" thanks to his time playing hockey which he thinks helps his entries in the show as it adds an extra something to his exhibits.

As well as taking part in the show as a contestant Mr Evison also holds the position of Chair of Moderation, of all the gardens at Chelsea. The post involves judging all of the show gardens and he says that though appearance is a factor so is long term practicality of the designs.

When looking at the future of gardening Raymond thinks that people are "putting less time into gardening", buying more mature plants rather than growing them themselves.

He does though say that growing vegetables seems to be an expanding practice and he has seen sales of potted tomato and cucumber plants grow, especially on his trips to America.

He also says that styles of gardens may well change in the coming years as climate change effects peoples gardening habits.

He suggested people in Guernsey may be creating more 'shade gardens' with large overhanging trees providing a roof of leaves to protect from the sun.
