Phantasm II DVD (1987)

Part II of the "Phantasm" series is a mixture of shocks and silliness but with a tongue-in-cheek attitude that's quite fun to watch. 'The Tall Man' returns with more balls, slightly more expensive effects and a few more lines on this uneven DVD release.

Ultimately it's a budget title but certain features like the ghastly scene selection menu are just offensively cheap, with the pokiest pictures ever and a nasty veneer over the whole thing. This extends to a picture quality that is both lifeless and colourless. The stereo sound mix is a little more fun but it's far from the best.

The added features suffer too, with the footage of Angus Scrimm at a "Fangoria" convention clearly filmed on home video by a clumsy elephant. Scrimm turns out to be quite fun though, pretending to suffer an identity crisis with his 'Tall Man' character breaking through every now and again.
