Between 1904 and 1994, Chipping Ongar was the location for a residential home for some of London's disabled and disadvantaged children. Known formerly as 'The Hackney Home' and latterly Great Stony School, the building was used to provide special education in a countryside environment for young people for whom fresh air and greenery was an alien experience. | | The residents line up for a group photo. |
The building is now the home of Theatre Resource who, along with Epping Forest District Museum, have created an exhibition to tell the stories, memories and experiences of the children who stayed there. Comprising photographs, interviews and artefacts, it is hoped that visitors will be able to get an insight into this previously unknown world. 'Tales from the Boarders' is currently open to the public at the Theatre Resource's home in Chipping Ongar High Street until Friday, 19 June. It will then move on to a number of venues in the South East of England. These will include:Epping Forest District Museum: 7, July - 4, September. Barleylands Museum, Billericay: 10, Sepetember - 4, November. |
