The Hayletts Gallery in Maldon plays host to two Essex artists who, aside from their friendship dating back for over twenty years, share an innate ability to capture scenes through their painting. Harwich born Hay first developed his talent at the Colchester School of Art and latterly at the Royal College of Art. He has spent many years teaching at the Colchester Institute, imparting his knowledge and experience to future generations. He predominantley paints outdoor scenes, capturing the likes of the rainy streets of London and misty views over glistening water, particularly the estuaries of Essex or perhaps the catch coming in at Aldeburgh. | | 'Bar London' by Michael Smee. |
Chelmsford born Smee also learnt his craft at the Colchester School of Art, before working at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to create backdrops. This led to work in television and film, working on sets such as Monty Python's Holy Grail. Unlike Hay, he prefers to paint indoor scenes, particularly pubs, where he can capture its atmosphere and fading decor. Both artists have exhibited widely throughout their careers, from the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions to the Minories in Colchester. Now they're at the Hayletts Gallery in Maldon, and will be so until Saturday 11th November. |
