The exhibition features the work of Captain Hugh Salvin Calverley MC and Bar (1894-1971), who served with the 1/5th Essex at Gallipoli and Palestine, and later on the Western Front during the First World War. | | 'West Ham Gully' in Gallipoli. |
During his service in Palestine he was wounded and when he returned to his home in Canada his experiences resulted in severe mental illness. In his later years he took up painting and poetry which helped to ease his condition, and it's some his work from this time that will be pat of the display at the museum in Oaklands Park. | | Captain Hugh Calverley MC, circa 1970. |
