Roger's recent themes include landscapes and woodland studies in watercolour and pastel, capturing colour with imagination. His themes are often deceptively simple, a group of trees or a stretch of meadow, and never look contrived. The compositions are dictated by the landscape itself, and the colour nuances reflecting the seasons, time of day and sheer variety within a single view, are admirably captured by his mix of media. Neil James works with an unrestricted complement of materials. Avoiding pre-conceived ideas of how materials should be used, he has always experiments with his work, and the reformation of matter is a critical element of his creative process. He says "Everything in existence is linked, I enjoy discovering the potential of this truth and it is these concerns that I bring to my work. My paintings are transformations of matter (the medium) into new forms (the piece) creating 'events' which rely on instinct more than recognition. My paintings are a visual metaphor for the fragile and transitory nature of existence." |
