The detailed images of 'non-places' at the city's edges are ambiguous and imaginative geographies. The work does not define the periphery as a 'green belt' but rather as 'displaced areas' - 'non-places' presented in a state of ambiguity. | | 'Dagenham East' C-type print |
The work moves to the edge, where human intervention with the land is imprinted in the mud. The photographs keep close to elemental details such as tire-tracks, industrial wreckage, waste such as bottles, broken-up slag and cracked earth. | | 'Beacontree' C-type print |
The viewer perceives far off mountain or desert like landscapes. These places are man-made, abandoned and left to their own devices. The result is photographic lyricism, dealing with the tense relationship between representation and what is represented. Steffi Klenz is a recent graduate from the Royal College and has exhibited widely in the UK and in Germany. |
