Five finalists from 'Radio Stars - the Rivals'

On Saturday 17th May 2003, five radio stars of the future travelled in style to the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire studios in Cambridge. They arrived in a gorgeous white limo driven by Roy from Ely Stretch Limos, to help present Nicki Ledgard’s Saturday Breakfast Show.

The five finalists were chosen by Radio Cambridgeshire listeners during a week of live auditions on the Peterborough and Cambridge Breakfast Shows. Carrie Kitching (9), Samuel Edwards (9), Lindon Pearce (10), Michael Edwards (15) and Sarah Goode (15) took part in BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s competition called 'Radio Stars the Rivals' which gave local youngsters the chance to audition for the positions of travel correspondents, sports reporter, co-presenter, weather girl/boy and news hound.

The group met Voices producer Catherine Carr at 5.30am on Saturday morning to arrive at the studios by 7am. Angus Sneddon from Look East was there to film the five finalists and then they were whisked into the studios to do their allocated jobs for real.

Carrie Kitching read the news and did a live report on the BBC’s Big Read from the centre of Cambridge; Lindon Pearce kept motorists across the county updated with the latest travel info; Michael presented the sports bulletins and offered his opinions on the BIG Southampton v Arsenal FA cup final; Sarah delivered faultless weather reports to keep Cambridgeshire’s gardeners up-to-date and Samuel Edwards kept the show on the road by co-presenting the programme with Nicki Ledgard.

The stretch limo then delivered the stars home, after breakfast on the way home.

Carol Kitching, Carrie’s mum said "The morning was brilliant – just brilliant". Samuel Edwards and his mum Hannah really enjoyed the day – and Samuel has now decided he wants to be a radio presenter when he grows up... so he should, one of his interviews appeared on Radio 4’s 'pick of the week' on Sunday, a programme which showcases the very best radio from ALL the stations in the UK!

Michael Thompson said the early morning was a killer, but that he really enjoyed the experience. The radio station was inundated with calls from listeners saying how much they enjoyed hearing the young talent on the airwaves…

There will also be a chance to do more presenting in June, when the the BBC will be broadcasting from the Community House in Wisbech for a whole weekend on 1026AM.
